THE DOMAIN.
TO THE EDITOR. Sm, —He-the letter of "Progress " in your issue of to-day, I beg as a citizen to protest mo=t strenuously against any such proposal as leasing the frontages of this noble estate. To think that the Auckland people would permit this fine extent of land, upwards of 200 acres, within the city boundaries, to becut and hacked about like all other similar pieces of land have been done in and around this city during the last few years would be enacting a repetition of the folly perpetrated by the Auckland Improvement Commission with the Albert Barracks Kstato. It is far too difficult and costly to obtain again land once leased or sold for recreation purposes, and to see the Domain interfered with in this manner would be a standing disgrace to the City Council and ratepayers of this fair city. It is the largest, and might be made one of the most beautiful public parks in the Australasian colonies. To have it made so most not be done at the expense of catting off from it a single foot of land. Such a site for a park is unequalled, and to improve and beautify this noble reserve the cost should be made a charge upon the city generally. Parnell and .Newmarket might fairly be asked to contribute towards the benefits they now derive, and the still greater ones they would have in the .future. If the City Council entertain the proposal for a moment, it will be on a par with their latest "fad" —the Sma.l-pox Hospital—the erection of which in the Domain, to Bay the leist of it, is illegal and beyond their power ; and even should that virulent ilisease break out in this .city, do tbey think that for a moment the citizens of Auckland would allow the Domain to be made a quarantine ground ? What the Council's intention* are in relation to the / improving of the Domain have as yet been kept very quiet; but they may rest assured that the people of Auckland will be alive to their interests, and never permit a second Albert Paik "job" to be perpetrated with their eyes wide open. I hope some abler pen than mine—perhaps yours, Mr. Editor—may take this matter up, and give proper ventilation to it.—l am, &c, " H. C.
