[FEOM OUB OWN OOBHESPOKDENT.I* THAMES, Monday. At Paeroa a middle-aged woman, named Mary Ann Bell, died suddenly of apoplexy.. It was at first supposed that her death was caused by violence. She was found dead in. bed, her head buried between two pillows. <T. E. Hansen's horse, in a springcarfc,. becoming frightened by the railway engine at Shortland, backed right np to the engine,, and its leg getting under a truck the hooE was taken off, and the animal had to be destroyed. The wheel of the cart was broken. Hansen estimates his loss at £10. WANGANUI, Monday. • A man named Andrew Lockhart was arrested to-day for false pretences at Nelson. He arrived from the latter place by the Kennedy on Sunday. CBRISTCHURCH, Monday. The directors of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company have received a telegram, from the works stating that the depth o£ No. 3 bore on Friday last was 420 feet. Oil is still showing freely in the different strata, now being passed through. This morning a boy 13 years of age, boh o£ John Devery, farmer, waa killed by being run over by a dray at Methven.
DUNEDIN, Monday. At the Polica Court to-day P. G. Bosewaa charged with offering a £5 Union Bank note knowing the same to bo a £1 note altered. The charge was dismissed for want of proof. The accused' said he got the note in Auckland. The suspicious circumstance againsS him was that chemicals, ink, brushes, &a, were found amongst his property. Smith's- woollen and dye works werebunifc down at Green Island on Wednesday. They were insured in the Standard Office for£2oo, but the plant and storfk-in-trade being all destroyed, the loss is nearly £300 over the insurance. Mr. Street, the pvewent Mayor, will not stand again. Three of the councillors will be candidates. Police InspectorYveldon, whilst travelling yesterday between Waipara and Lawrence* was thrown out of his buggy through tho horse bolting. He received a severe sprain, of the knee and general shock. A Stock Exchange has been formed in Sunedin, comprising leading sharebrokers.
