WAIKATO DISTRICT HEWS.

|TROH OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.| Hamilton, Saturday. It is satisfactory to learn from the Herald of Thursday, that the twelve tons of cheese sent from the Ashburton faatory to England realised 67 per cent., or nearly Sd per lb. The Waikato factory has not yet learned the price realised for its consignment to England, bntaro painfully aware that the cost, charges, freight, commission, &c., amount to no less than per lb. This, with anything leas than 8d per lb., a* the price realisable at home, will too heavily handicap the industry in the home market, which, if the cheese factory movement is to extend, must be looked upon as our chief outlet. The high cost of freight is due to the fact that the cheese cannot bo sent as ordinary oargo, but in specially prepared rooms or ohambers. There is this, however, to be considered, that if instead of small parcels of a few tons tho exports wero to assume large proportions, this special expenso spread over a larger quantity of cheese shipped would be proportionately lessened, and the price per ton or per lb. would be considerably reduced. A«, in many other instances, increased production, instead of depressing the Industry, will be the very means of enabling it to be profitably carried on. Tho footpath in Grey-street along Sydneysquare has beetr formed, and is another instance of t! je saving that would be effected if borough works were let by oontracb instead of being undertaken by day labour. This work is uotimated to nave cost 7s fid per chain, where contractors could liave been got to do it for 3s 6d per chain. The oontract system, if introduced, would largely save the rates, s.nri enable more necessary works to be undertaken. NoiRUAWAHM, Saturday. Miss Connell, who recently suffered a severe dislocation of the shoulder, is progressing favourably under the treatment of Br. Waddington. Kihikihi, Saturday. A Band of Hope in connection with the Weal cyan body here has been established, and eighteen juvenile members have been carolled. The officers are the Rev. Mr. Hutsoni President; Mr. J. Storey, Treasurer and Secretary. A committee consisting of Messrs. Gill and E. and G. Bridgman was elected. At the meeting of the Tamahere Road Board yesterday evening, tenders were received for the contract on the main central road, from Messrs. J. Coombes, Cauidy, and Ryan and Camachan. That of the latter was accepted at the following scale ratea :— Timber, 23s per 100 feet; formation and drain, 13* 6d per chain ; cuttings, 8d per yard. For the Junction-road works there were eight tenders ; that of Mr. T. Cowley being acoeptcd — viz., formation, 5s per chain; pipes, 22*. The bridge upon the Swamp-road, between here and Te Awarautu, has been repaired, and the road is now open to traffic.
