NEW ZEALAND MEAT FREEZING COMPANY.
Yesterday Mr. Joseph Banks/./inahagiiig director of the JSew Zealand Company's works,. submitted to ;us" for; inspection the plans of the new meat freezing works, whioh the company propose shortly, to erect on the land leased by them from.thk Harbour Board. Some idea of the.extent";6f the works and buildings may be gathered from the fact that they will cover..an.area.of< three-quarters of an acre, and have a frontage to the Railway Wharf of 160 feet.-The buildf ings will be quadrangular in form, alineof riiilway passing through, the centre of. the.■•'Jijcip.fc".. and connecting with the Railway;,\Yharf.: The rear portion of the block will.■coutain. the freezing and principal storage premises, and that section nearest the Railway Wharf will be devoted to shops, etc, of/various classes. It is contemplated to gofon.with the rear portion first, so that the operations' O£ the company may be gone on with,;on.a scale of considerable magnitude,: .with..as little delay as possible. Tenders, .for''this ; section will be called for immediately,.and it is expected that in eight months {'freezing' operations will be started. Referring,(tq. the plans aa they stand, and as >they«.will.: l be finally carried out, it may'"be: said that the building will have a handsome, faQade and be four storeys in height. ■:?■ The? ground floor will be divided into .:tw;6' fish .shops, two milk shops, one butcher's': shop;, fruit shops. In rear is the fish store, cold meat store, and fruit store. These*shops and compartments will be supplied with cold air from the refrigerator, so that the'/fcem-tf perature can be kept down to 30 degrees. Here also will be a wholesale meat market; tho apartment being supplied with bold airi It will hold sufficient meat to supply Auckland for two or three weeks. This floorJwilK also contain the ice-house, freezing-room,;; engine and boiler-rooms. The ice-house will' be capable of holding two of ice. On ' either side of the .railway line, which bisects the buildings,' -will.;be. spacious platforms, also eloyatore; ;.for: transferring goods to the various Vstoreysi On the first floor is the tinning and meat preserving establishment ;■. .the cheese and butter stores are isolated. On this floor is also the engineer's and general store; tinsmith's workshop; and" store for frozen nieat. This latter will hold'10,000 carcases.of frozen mutton. ;?The tin-.: ning plant and other machinery is already to hand from the United States. The second' and third floors are to be devoted to storage 1 ; of wool, &c. We . may mention that the milk shops have been all applied for,/but the; others are still open for application/; ■';!';'>'
