ATTEMPTED MURDER AND TRIPLE SUICIDE.
News is to hand (says the Fiji Times) from Savu Savu of a murderous attack which was made in the early part of last week by three Fijians upon Mr. Volmer, and its singular culmination in the suicide of his three assailants, It appears that the three men entered Mr. Volnjer's store when all his labourers were absent, and became so insolent and unruly that Mr. Volmer ordered them to leave. This they refused to do, whereupon he endeavoured to cjoct them, and they in turn assaulted him, one seizing an axe, and in the attempt to cut him down inflicting a severe wound on his shoulder. The native informant states that the white man fought so hard that the Fijians could not kill hi.rn, but after subjecting him to other serious injuries thoy looted the store, rifled his cash box, and having alao stolen his gun, fled into the bush. In a short time a general pursuit was undertaken, and after it had been continued three days the men were found in the bush hanging to trees quite dead with their plunder around them. The bodies were allowed to hang until the stipendiary magistrate, Mr. M. Heffernan, arrived and ordered them to be cut down. Mr. Volmer is expected in town by the Emily Miller when fuller particulars of this affair will be obtainable. There, however, appears to be no doubt as to the fact of the assault and auioide of the assailants.
