v " PRELIMINARY. It is proposed to write a series of short papers on various social, industrial, political, scientific, commercial, and religious. . These subjects will bs treated freely. They will not be handled in a cold, formal, abstract manner, nor will they be merely skimmed, or held, as it were, at arm'slength, I Theyj and the actors in them, who play I their parts in varied form and character, will be encoursgtd, reproved., or lan chert at, as their merits or demerits rnay happen to deserve, not ceneorioa ly, not timidly ; but ire' ly„ firmly, and in a kindly spirit. The writerß, as far as may be, will " hold the mirror upto JN ature." They think there are not a- few grave errors and abus"s in our world of fashion, trade and folly, which need to be passed through the crucible of critic ciara, before they will be admitted or mended. The writers of these papers will address themselves to the work merrily, sadly, or severely as it may happen, y' I '' l .. ■ From grave to gay, from livoly to severe, in a very humble fashion, with the simple object and earnest desire of contributing their mites to the common welfare. They will speak the truth freely and fearlessly. v They may sometimes, perhaps, be thought to write strongly, but shciild that be so,-it will be, because they feel strongly. They will endeavour impartially to look at both sides of a question, remembering that like. the knight's shield In the story—every subject has two sides. The papers will be anonymous, and will appear ,at irregular intervals over a letter in the alphabet. The Editor." ABC Papers."
