[BY TKLF.ORAI'II.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Welling iost, In 'reference to 1 the Wang--.nui child murder case, inwhich t Phcebe v Vmteh was found - guilty of drowning her infant daughter,- but was recommended to mercy, I understand that the Government are awaiting .a", report ■ from, the Judge before taking sny action m . the matter. There is some comment; here ' "on tho conduct -the police'in .thei case. ■ The prisoner.'ifcmay be romcinbered,-alleged that the child was drowned by itafather, a - half-caste Chinaman known as Sam Tirnarc. ; The only steps taken to man"?! appear to have consisted in' the insertion of a misleading notice in the Police Gazette, • coupled with a statement that the prisoner's story was not believed.' -■ The' Post to-night has an article on the subject, pointing out u that' such 1 : a" course'is grossly unfair to. the 'woman who was"detained : out funds, sand 'that the addendiiiii'i'to the" so-called description was the strongest pos- ; sible'hint to the-police officers to'whom the ■ Gazette was forwarded that they need not ' .trouble themselves about the matter.
