The ordinary meeting of the Board of Education was held yesterday afternoon Irecent : Messrs. Moat (in the chair), Prime > Dargaville, Hobbs, C-oldie, Luke, Laishley, and Moss. An application for re painting schools and mniu.erim; class doors was referred to the Executive Committee. ALEXANDKA.-Graut of £27 103 for repairs and fencing was made. If act A fU. —£1— lor repairs was granted. Hoteo North.— Application for fencing. —Defarred until Mr. Allright reports on the matter. „ , , . HowiCK.— Re site for teacher s dwelling. An offer waa made of a house opposite the school at a price of £350.—Agreed that Inspector and Engineer n port on the matter Kako.—Application tor teachers dwelling. O'uaidera-.iou deferred until Mr. iioldio's visit to the district. Kaitaia.—Agreed to close this school. KiWiKAWA.- Application for aa extra -rrant. The committee complain- d that the sum allowed them was too small, and unless the prant was increased to £20 they would be obliged to resign.—Mr. Hobbs supported the application. — Messrs. Dargjville and Goldie opposed an exc ption being made in this case.—On the motion of Mr. Laishley it was agreed to defer the consideration of the matter until the who.e question of grants to schools is cons-id. red. LtrcA.s' Creek.—The committee applied for £6 for improving the scho 1 ground. A short discussion ensued, during which itwa-> sKkted that the Inspector reported that the grants to this Ei.hfui had been unu -ually large. Waisomiti. —Mr. Goldie brought up a complaint of the committee, that letters of the commit ee dated 1« "bruary 0 and M.ue.i 7 had not been answer*; 1. —li*e Secietaiy said that the matter had been dealt with by the Board, but he adm tted that the committee's letters had no: yet been answered. M r> Lais' ley agreed with Mr. Goldie, that all letters received by the Board should bo answered without delay. Ilemcnod, Thdu the Board expresses regret to the committee that the letters have not yet been answered. Standing Okl>k*;s. — Mr. moved "That M ssrs. Moss, Goldie, and the mover,'be a committee to draw up standing orders for guidance of the Board, and submit same for approval."—Mr. Hobbs said the Board had in the past guided by the Act.—Motion put and carried. Mk. Marti> s Rkm .val. —Mr. for Mr. N'oss, moved, "That the resolution dated lGth February ultimo, respecting Mr. Martin be rescinded, and that in lieu toerenf it be res ilve 1 that Mr. Mai tin be removed from Graftou-road to tome other school. Some discussion ensued on the point wheth-r "the Press should be allowed to be present throughout tl.e meetin,; of the Board, or, as iii Che = past, that they he requested to retire £,t, acert;vn stage of th-.' proceedings. Messrs. Ooldie, Dargavil'e, llobbs, and Laishley warmly advocated the p.-esenco of reporters «urin" the meeting of tiie Board from beginning to end. : hey c .nteuded that it was quite irregular to ask the reporters to retire, and then transact business w-hich ought to be done in open meeting. It the Board went into committee to ciseuss any matter the committee should report their decision to the Board.—After further discussion, the motion was carried. Gekat Bakkikk. —The committee asked that Mr J. Simpson's appointment ahould be confirmed. Mr. Goldie said the Board decided last year that Mr Simpson suoutd not be employed by the Board. The Executive Committee must have known of this decision, and yes be had been employed as teacher. He moveil the following resolution —"That the resolutions of the Board of the 10th of February, be confirmed r- the removal of Mr. Simpson from the Great Barrier—and that the following gentlemen, viz., Messrs. Moss, Moat, Laishley, and Goldie be committee to enquire into the circumstances connected with his appointment as teacher to the Great Barrier, "without the information having been laid before the Board of the fact that, in August of 18S"2, he made an application for employment, and that the Board had then, upon the recommendation of the Executive, refusod to employ him."— Mr. Goldie said the enquiry was not into the character of Mr. Simpson, but into the conduct of the Inspector and Secretary.—Mr Laishley said he had such confidence in Mr O'Sullivan's iHtcgrity and ability that he would support the motion, because he thought it wasa j much in Mr. O'Sullivan's interest as that of the Board, that it ahould be carried.—Mr. Da: garville moved that the following words be prefixed to the motion: "In accordance with Mr. O'Sullivan's request." With this addition the motion was put and carried. Peosi'ectcs ok Girls' School. On the motion of Mr. Laiuh.ey, the Inspector's recommendation of the insertion of calisthenics, &c., in the prospectus of the Girls' High School, was approved.
