New ZzkLM'D Herald Office. Thursday eversin;*. TflE duties eolheted to-day amounted to ±.'IBB9 15* 10-1. Business daring the last week has been exceedingly quiet, and there im> few transactions of any note to report. buHio«3B ha.n b»»en done, however, h;is been of a sound nature, and free of Ml appearance of speculation. The arrivals of tho barques Mataura and Crownthorpe, from Lmdon, have in a few instance.'] rcph nii-hed stocks, but the cargoes generally have only added to an overstocked market. The garden and orchard market ia glutted, exccptiMj for oranges, which are scarce. By the Wairarnpa, which arrived on Wednesday, a large supply of onions was received (<iome 20 ton»), ami in consequence pi ice < have declined Iu other lir:<M pi ices remain without much alteration upon previous quotation;*. In f.irm and dairy produce there is little to not#'. Butter remain* at Is per Ih. wholesale, whilst hive b«en reduced to 1* 3,1 per dozen. Thi-< reduction is due to the hi:'h price previously charged, which h«d the off.-ct of checkii-u the consumption in a very measure. In thj flour market there id no alteration to report. Tho businet-a done has only been ft nm hand to jnonUi, and there are indications of the market taking in price in a few days. The- kauri gum market ia mcnt difliculfc to <leal at the pro.-.cnt time. Quotation* remain htst reported, but they must he accented with very caution, ?•« only being nominal. The hu*ii*?3s is at a completer standstill. there burr,- no buyers at ?.h_* present time, and ficm the indications of the present state, sellers will liave to be prepared for a utill further decline in pric;\ From a cable message received yesterday by a private firm we learn that tho London market is much easier, and prices are inclined to drop somewhat. The incoming mnil, however, U expected to give a decisive tone to the market, and tho general impression is that advices will be of such a natnire as to give a better tone. This ia, however, only assumption. We think, as we have already said, that it will be wiser to prepare for a decline. The flax market is still qoiet and at unchanged prices. We quote £17 to £20 per ton.
Movements amongst the shipping has been somewhat quiet during the week, owing to th» statoof '.he wither. A lane immber of vessels are lyintf in harbour ready for sea, and are only awaiting a slant of wind to get away. Amongst j the arrives we may mention the Orownthorpe . bitquo, fr..m Londou, with general inerchaudize; tbe Aia.vui, fi-.sn Melbourne, via Southern ports ; and the Wairarapa, from Sydney. The departures have been confined to our cn.tr,! st.'anieis and the Arawata for Sydney The hiL-aritin.: Irene, lor New York, has cleared cut. with a cargo of 395 tons kauri gum, valued at i"Jl,o-iO. Messrs. E. aud A. Ksacs held a trade sale at their rooms to-d-.y, u f KugH.-=li and Melbourne made dotuin--, ci.uipiUins con?, ve.-'s, &c. There was a fui! ,»t!.'nda!:ce ot the trade, and ilthou«h tho pries reali.-i'd wore not altogether satisf; cterv, "yc*. c r.sidering the ov-rstocked state of th- n.»tl:et fnir price., were obtained.
