THE GOLDFIELDS.
[FROM OCIt OWS COIUIESPONDENT.] Tiiamks, Tuesday. Auicknia. —Crushing was commenced on PYiday with live beau of stampers. Upwards of 37 loads of quartz from the stopes on Dixon's reef will be put through. Rising and stopi.jg are still being carried on upon Dixon's reef. As yet very little of McLean's bangingwall leader lias been touched in the stopes, as tlu- point where it junctions with Dixon's reef is only S feet cast of the rise, and the intermediate drive and stopes arc extended -2.") feet east of that, so that the larger portion of the workings are on Dixon's reef. The manager intends shortly to carry forward the western drive a sufficient distance to enable him to start stopini; on tins portion of the reef. No definite estimate can be made as to how tho dirt in the battery will turn out, but from the present prospects the manager is satisfied that it will yield well. . Ki;riiKV I'aku —'1 be manager has driven about 20 feet in a northerly direction on the lode lately intersected, but UO gold has been seen. The lode still continues to carry an abundance of iron pyrites of antimony. Di:vr I.r.v; Tkihittk.-—'The lode lately come upon in the 010-feet southern drive has api'<arent!y !h s'l; penetrated on the eastern Siiso of the drive, the lode measuring about :> feet I) inches in width, "n the western siiie of the drive there is still quartz in the face. The s-.0:..- is of a very good quality, though somewhat whitish in appearance, and carries a :.<ii' per cciitage of favourable mineral. Fiom the present course of this reel it is evident that it will junction with the large lode (which was intersected some years ago, and \v!iu h i> about 2 feet back fr_.rn th" now in band) a short distance ea.-d of the t'lriw [l!Y TM.I CHM'II. —OWN Conr.ESl'O* DBNT. 1 Tiiam s, Tuesday evening. The lead still continues lo h'.'k well, although no great haul of -peciinciis has been obtained during the past week. There is a small break in t!:e pres.-nt i ice. which promises to make some good go'i.i. irue especially as the Cross are getting s..;:ii' uood sroue in their winze, widen is now nearly down to the level of our drive. I am starting a cross-cut in this section in order to intersect the Mariner's reef. The j>.v»t ;.t wnirh I am starting is about MM feet westward of break, and by d:'ivi; _' IUO ie ■: due north I expect to cut the Marii.er's :v : at the point where the break interse.-ts :t. Should the same class of country continue that we now have, a rich deposit e'.uiit to be obtained in this quarter. The leading stope in the same section is now -•"> feet past tho break, and has produced cue good specimens during the past week, leaving gold still showing. The uiiri stop-- in No. 1 section west is forv.rd t.. ti.e break, and will be pushed on v.'.lii all >p.-e t to the point where rich gold iv:i! • mi. i ::: tlie leading stope. We have obtained 2jwt. of specimens from all quarters during ti.e p;r-t ch. As soon as I have cot the sJvift ami cross-cut drive commenced, I p".rp j--' ea'i:: .. for tenders for these works in order to have them pushed on as speedily as possible. We ii:iislied tlie specimen crushing on Thursday last, for the good yield of 1 of retorted gold from 27cwt. of Stone. Tie specimens we have now on hand and what v.v may obtain before the end of the month will be put through, as usual, before the :ina! cleaning up. We have now got tliriUozs. of hard squeezed amalgam from the general i-tutl, which is lodged in the bank for .-nfe 'Keeping, and .\s the dirt is still showing up well at the battery, I expect to obtain at lea=t 25000i'.=. of gold for the n.out:.'.-: rim. .Mmvn iTAi.tr.i. —Tiie mine manager (Mr. J. The same leader is somewhat disordered m tlie- lacc of the eastern drive at the same level. All Nations stopes, above SO leet level : The branch leaders show colours at each breaking. No picked stone has come to hand from h.-re during the week. Heldt's section, I::i! feet level : A few pounds of picked .-tone have been obtained from stopes on No. !l reef and branch leaders since my last. We biive only l>een able to break but little of either, having had to secure grour.d and one of our main passes. Tunnel level : Driving wa.- commenced easterly on Monday last iri iii the Don Pedro boundary, We have sii.ee met with a large slide, dislocating the leader entirely, but I hope soon to pick it up again. No. 'J reef, below the tunnel level, is without change to report. Nonpareil, 215jeet level : The drive is being extended bitwecn two leaders, and averaging four inches in width, the other six inches, both of which cany gold. About lolbs. of picked stone have been obtained from here during the week. The two men who were crosscutting .-it the low level have been removed to the "Jls feet level for the time being, as I want to push in this drive towards the AVaitemat.a as quickly as possible. We shall commence crushing on Monday week. Oi.n Cai.::l'"Mas'.—The mine manager (Mr. T. Hicks) reports under date November "Joth as follows The winze on No. 2 h-vel on the specimen leader is now dov. n '-!7 The leader is still keeping its rise, but no geld lias been seen this week. T:.e stopes above No. 2 level are •still tinning out a little crushing dirt on the same leader. There have been no leaders met la>t 10 feet. The cleaning out and ie timbering of the old ."' 0. 1 level is being ;.;;»':ed forward with all speed to open up tlii.i block of ground. The last rise is not sulii ieiit to carry air and form a pass for nie.lioe;: ami .juartz. The reef in the stopes above tin- level driven from No. 2 shaft is turning out fair crushing dirt, but is slow work until I get up this other pass from the old lev 1 drive on No. 2 reel top. lam still crushing eight hours per day with 10 head on payable dirt, but not as good as last ■week. Witton and Jones crushed one load for loz. Mdwts.
