BARLOW'S LIFE ATTEMPTED.

; :: THE ASSASSIN ESCAPES. [ Veey general surprise was felt in town yesterday when the tidings became known that i an attempt had been made to assassinate I Barlow, the half-caste, at Alexandra; on . Monday night. The public feeling was that he . had acted very indiscreetly, and in execrable taste, to go up to the frontier bo soon after the execution of Winiata, in bringing whom; to the gallows he had played so conspicuous a part. It would certainly have been much better to have secu-ed whatever property lie possessed up there through the medium of the authorities, than : to. have exposed the country - to, the risk of another native", difficulty and embroilment when native affiurs.were beginning to look hopeful, and promising of a permanent peace and reconciliation. The accounts of the'affair arc very conflicting, some yersons, indeed, going so' far as to say that no serious attempt of the kind was ever, made at all. At all events, Barlow proceeded to Hamilton before daylight, under escort, and came down by the Waikato evening train as far as Penrose, where he changed for Onehunga, and went to the native settlement at Mangere, where he has been residing. It is stated that he had arranged with Mr. Kohler to go to .the Thames with the Waxworks Show, but as it i 3 feared that some of the Kingites might have a " pot" shot at him down there, it is possible the engagement may not eventuate. The following are the telegrams from our | own' correspondents, referring to the at- ! tempted assassination:— - Hamilton, Tuesdays Barlow, the capturer of Winiata, arrivedhere before daylight fr<sm Alexandra under police escort, an attempt having been made on his life about 11 o'clock last night while in compauy with Tu Tawhiao. They went to get their horses out of the- hotel stables, when two shots were fired at Barlow, one striking him across the breast, and ripping his coat and waistcoast. Barlow returned the fire on the native seen running away, but Tu Tawhiao crying "lam shot," causing a diversion, the assassin escaped. Barlow had been in Alexandra recovering the horses he had left behind him after Winiata's capture. He leaves for Auckland ill to-day's txain. ■ Alexandra, Tnesday. News of the attempt on the life of Barlow;' who arrested Winiata,' you will have already' received. The affair ba3 caused a great sen- I sation here amongst the natives. :It has been reported, to me that he was closely watched since his arrival, his presence giving great umbrage to the natives so soon after- the execution of Winiata.- He should have got his horses sent down to him through the Government. At Whatiwbatihoe to-day korero has been going on since daylight, the general opinion being that Barlow was sent here to bring trouble amongst them. A warm friend of Barlow's, who was with him all day yesterday, states that he was behind Barlow 'when the shots were fired. He thinks that Barlow, seeing someone outside the stable, or thinking so, fired the shots himself. This is the universal opinion amongst the natives. TV Tawhiao is greatly blamed for being in his company, , as he would be no protection against any of ; Winiata's friends, who were determined on revenge. The absence of Tawhiao at Kawhia j is generally deplored. Amidst so many conflicting reports now circulating here, the presence of a fust-class detective would be invaluable. ■ 1
