[FKOM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] THAMES, Thursday. Mb. Bradley's Paeroa coach was upset this morning, when about five miles from the Thames, through the pole breaking. There were four passengers in at the time, who escaped with merely a shaking. A rara avis, in the shape of a live kiwi, was brought into town to-day by a native, who caught it near Warahoe. The bird stalks about 15 inches high.

GISBORNE, Thursday. A gold medal was awarded to the Southern Cross Company for petroleum at the Christchurch Exhibition. The shaft is now down 71 feet. Oil is freely' exuding from the centre bore. [press association.] WELLINGTON, Thursday. The Education Department have promised a liberal support towards the establishment of the Girls' High School in Wellington. A suitable building has been obtained at a low rate of rent. Arrangements arc being made for the Hinemoa to take the members of both Houses of Legislature to Canterbury, in order that they may visit the Exhibition. The proposal is to start either to-morrow (if the Colonial Treasurer continues too ill to bring down his budget), or else on ths following Friday, returning on the Tuesday after. The weather is still stormy and showery. CHRISTCHUUCH, Thursday. The Christchurch South Licensing Bench held an adjourned meeting to-day. After a long argument, the Bench allowed tne application for the resumption of the Borough Hotel license by Mr. Barrett to be withdrawn till the next quarterly meeting. Eight 12 o'clock licenses were granted, and ten hotels -were restricted to 10 o'clock licenses. Longmore has not been captured yet. Not less than seven vessels, which had left the port during the last day or two, put back to-day owing to the heavy wind and sea outside. Forty-one names, chiefly of aliens, were struck off the Lyttelton roll to-day on the application of the Registrar. Further exhibition awards include :— Southern Cross Petroleum Company, gold medal; Sykes, Auckland, silver medal, for hygienic bath; A. Reischek, Auckland, silver rnedal, for taxidermy; VV. Gordon, Taranaki, bronze medal, for artificial orange tree. A Christchurch storekeeper, having repeatedly missed cigarettes from his window, in the vicinity of a broken pane of glass, set a rat-trap. A few' minutes afterwards he had the pleasure of seeing the thief caught by the hand in the ti'ap. The skating races at the Exhibition last night were a great success. Over 2000 persons were present. The Westport has been beached alongside the Akaroa wharf. Some of the bow plates are stove in and jagged. The ship is in an excellent position, having settled on a level keel. DUNEDIN, Friday. The body of Walter Bridge, fireman, was found in the well of the new dredge this

morning. He was missed during the night, and it is supposed that he fell into the well and was killed. Deceased leaves a. wife and five children, who are rendered nearly destitute by his loss. The report of the Ofcago Art Society states that the sale of the last exhibition resulted very satisfactorily, £242 being realised, against £214 in the previous year. The council have carried the following resolution :—" That all the membsrs of the kindred art societies in New Zealand be considered honorary members of the Otago Art Society." The council will this year offer » prize of 10 guineas for "the beat study of a' New Zealand tree. Traffic on the Southern railway lines is increasing so rapidly that it has been found necessary to put on an extra permanent goods train between Dunedin and Clinton. There are 3till complaints from the Tapanui districts of a scarcity of trucks.
