A general meeting of the Working Men's Political Association of Christchurch was held on the 3rd March. The President, Mr. J. Biltcliff, occupied the chair. The Chairman stated that the present meeting was the first regular one of the socicty, which would in future meet every month. Some of the Political associations in ' the South had combined for the purpose of united action in support of the eight hour system. Mr. Eckberg read a paper on "The necessity for amendment in the laws relating to coroners' inquests." He pointed out the inconvenience occasioned to persons by having sucli a large number of jurcrs as was the case at present, and suggested that in cases of violent or sudden deaths, unattended with suspicious circumstances, it would be quite suflicient to have a jury of four, who should have power to call for a larger jury if they thought necessary. Mr. J. Chalmers was elected treasurer of the association.
At the first meeting of the Mauku Licensing Committee, held at the hall, Patumahoe, Mr. H. Crispe'was chosen as chairman.- The only other business was to pass accounts for the payment of some £3 15s, and make an order on tlic treasurer of the Highway Board to pay; and it the same thing goes on at each quarterly meeting, it will be profitable affair to the district.— [Own Correspondent, March 15.]
