WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.
[FROM OFn OWN' CORRESPON'BEN'TS.]
Hamilton', Tuesday. Colonel Reader and Superintendent Bell Thomson are both expected in Waikato during the present week. The Hamilton Cricket Club will play the Alexandra Club on the ground of the latter early next month, probably the 10th. Cricket of late has been utterly neglected by the former club. The fencing round the well-formed pitch on Sydney Square has been down, and not a practice has been held since the English team visited Waikato. No tendera were received last night by the Borough Council for fencing the embankment forming the western approach to the bridge, and the time for receiving tenders has been extended to the 2Sth inst.
Cambridge, Tuesday. The Colonial Bank having agreed to contribute £30 towards the formation of the road at the corner of the bank property and Victoria-street, the Town Board has determined to proceed with the work, and has accepted the tender of Messrs. Mann and Co.
The Armed Constabulary left yesterday morning under Captains Gascoigne and Capel. It is understood that there will be very little encouragement given to visit the town, and the men will not be allowed to keep horses at the camp. The petition praying the Governor to proclaim this township a town under the Town Districts Act has been forwarded to His Excellency, and the 20th April fixed as the date for holding the first election under the Act.
The trade between the Manukau and Waikato via the Waikato Heads has proved so profitable to the Waikato Steam Navigation Company that a steel paddle steamer lias been ordered by them frem Home, to cost £10,000. The vessel will be of suitable draught for thfi river traffic. The coasumptioa of bonedust and other artificial manure, and various heavy goods, in Waikato, is very great, and the company importing these direct from Melbourne to Manukau in their own vessels, are securing almost a monopoly of the supply required in Waikato.
KiHiKiiu, Tuesday. The death of Mr. A. C. Elmsley, which I telegraphed you yesterday, from Te Awa mutu, has thrown a gloom over this settlement. The dramatic performance on Friday evening has in consequence been postponed
