DAVITT DECLARED INELIGIBLE.
London, February 28. In the House of Commons last night, a resolution was passed setting forth that Mr. Davitt, one of the prominent members of the Land League, who was recently elected to represent Meath, is not eligible to sit in the House of Commons, he being now under arrest.
INVESTIGATING THE IRISH LAND ACT WORKING. London", February 28 (night). In the House of Commons this evening, after the postponement of the orders of the day had been agreed to, Mr. Gladstone brought on the motion of which he gave notice on the 20th instant, and which takes the form -of a message to the House of Lords, dissenting in terms already telegraphed, from its action in appointing a select committee to inquire into the working of the Irish Land Act. The Premier made a lengthy speecli in support of the motion, and, on resuming his seat, was followed by Mr. Gibson, Q.C. (Attorney-General for Ireland in the Beaconsfield administration), who moved "the previous question," and addressed the House in opposition to Mr. Gladstone's motion. The debate was then adjourned till to-morrow.
COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY. London, February 27. The committee to inquire into the working of the Irish Land Act of the House of Lords consists of ten Peers. Earl Cairns is the chairman of the committee.
INFORMATION REFUSED. Loxdox, February 28. It' lias transpired that the select committee appointed by the House of Lords to enquire into the working of the Irish Land Act, invited the Chief Secretary for Ireland to give evidence. The Cabinet has, however, refused to sanction such a course, and Mr. Forster will, therefore, decline the request of the committee.
SENTENCE ON NIHILISTS. St. Petersburg, February 27. The trial of twenty prominent Nihilists has just concluded. Ten of the accused have been sentenced to death, and ten to penal servitude for life. FROZEN MEAT. London*, February 27. The cargo of frozen meat per steamship Orient, consisting of mutton and lamb, has been sold at an avarago of sid per lb. The meat was of fair quality.
LONDON WOOL MARKET.
London, February 28,
The new series of colonial wool auctions opened to-day. Tliere was a large attendance of both Home and foreign buyers. The opening catalogue comprised G4OO bales. The bidding was animated, and good competition was experienced for the various lots offered. . The prices ruling at the close of the late sales were firmly maintained. The present series of auctions will close on the otli April. London, J larch 1. .The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following London cable, dated March Ist:—"The wool sales opened at the level of last sales on the 28th February. The competition by both Home and foreign buyers is active. The sales comprise about 265,000 bales. 35,000 bales have been sent to the manufacturing districts direct. The opening catalogue contains G-iOO bales."
LONDON MARKETS.
London, February 28. Consols advanced and are now quoted at 100ir. New Zealand securities remain at the following quotations : —The 5 per cent. 10-40 loan is 105 ; the 5 per cent. 1889 loan is 104; the lb per cent. 1879-1994 loan is 100. The wheat market is dull. Adelaide, ex store, remains at 545; New Zealand ditto is 50s ; Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, is 40s. The market for Australian tallow is quiet. Best beef is unchanged at 40s, and the best mutton at 4Gs.
HOMEWARD MAILS,
London, February 28.
The homeward Australian and New Zealand mails, via Brindisi, which left Melbourne on the lStli January, were delivered in London yesterday.
SHIPPING DISASTER.
[per merchant shipping and underwriters' association.] London, February 2S. The ship Woodville, bound to Port Chalmers from Liverpool, went ashore at Holyhead, North Wales. The captain and some of the crew were drowned. The vessel has been got off, and has been taken back to Liverpool for repairs.
COLONIAL NEWS.
MELBOURNE GRAIN MARKET. Melbourne, March 1. New Zealand feeding oats are quoted at 3s 4d, and milling oats at 3s 7d. Wheat is very firm at os 7d (sic), and bai-ley is very firm at 4s sd.
CHARGE AGAINST INSURANCE
AGENTS.
Adelaide, March 1
Messrs. Hicks and Barker, insurance agents, of this city, who were arrested on the 27th February on a charge of attempting to defraud the Australian Mutual Provident Society, were brought up at the Police Court today charged with obtaining a worthless policy, and with impersonation. The prisoners were remanded.
