According to tho ; "Banking Directory for lS81,"-the paid-up capital and reserves of Britwh.Banks show a marked development. The total paid-up capital in Great Britain and Ireland amounts to. £05,216,000, which is an increase—a net increase of £831,500 on the .year, the year being taken as from November 1879, to September ISSO. The total of :the reserve funds is approximated at £26,423,500, which is « set .increase .of £941,50011 The proportion of reserve to paid-up capital is in Ireland 38 per cent. u in Scotland 45, and in England 48 per cent. ! (of course excluding the Bank of England). J-During the two years 1879 and 1880, vthe capital and reserve funds, taken together; jof the United Kingdom, were increa'sea by nearly two millions stealing, this increase being to a large extent connected ■with the recoustitutiori of many of the Banks on the lines of limited liability. The striking increase .in the number of Banking offices which characterised the years 1876-7 and 8, received a wholesome check in 1879. To the. foregoing we may add, for:the purpose of comparison, that the proportion of reserve to the capital in the Banks of the seven Australasian colonies Jis per ceiit. It is also worthy of remark that the capital of our Banks is more than one-fifth of; the total capital of the Banks of Great Britain and Ireland.
