Is , the House of Commons to-day the" Irish Land Bill came up for consideration in committee of the whole House. On the first clause being moved, a long and animated debate ensued, and still continues. Up to the present time 1500 amendments to various clauses of the measure have been entered on the order paper, and notice continues to be given of fresh amendments. LONDON MARKETS. London, May 31. Consols remain at 102|. New Zealand securities are unchanged. The quotations are : —5 per 10-40 loan is 105 ; the 5 per cent. 1889 loan is 105 ; the U per cent. 18791904 loan is 103. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, continues at 495, and New Zealand at 4»s. Adelaide flour is quoted at 33s 6d, ex warehouse. Australian tallow : Best beef, 34s 6d ; best mutton, 375. LONDON WOOL SALE. London, May 31. At the wool sale to-day, 8400 bales were offered, making a total of 168,000 catalogued since the opening. A good demand was experienced for the various lots offered. « COLONIAL NEWS. SOUTH AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT. Adelaide, June 2. The South Australian Parliament was opened to-day, by Sir "William Jervoise. His Excellency on the occasion, pointed out the necessity which exists for the reform of the Legislative Council. He regretted the unfavourable harvest of the past season, but said that the revenue during the year had been maintained, and it was not anticipated that any deficiency " would be shown. At the same time, an increase iri expenditure would necessitate an increase in the revenue, and a change in the system of taxation. The reforms to be proposed would be in the direction of an increase of the property tax and a modification of the tariff, with the view to the relief of the productors, especially in the Northern Territory. Eresh expenditure would be necessaiy in connection with waterworks in various towns in the colony. The speech then went on to enunciate the principal measures to be introduced by the Government during the session. These will comprise Bills for tlie reform of the Civil Service, for the abolition of the pension system, for authority to construct the trans-con-tinental railway, for the amendment of the Land Act, and an amendment of the constitution of the Marine Board.
