WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.

[from our own correspondents.] KiiiiKlui, Thursday. Messrs. Farrell, Hutchinson, Berry, McKinder, Corboy, Anderson, Maunders, Elmsley, Natrass, aud Major Jackson, have been appointed directors of the Public Hall Company, with power to select a site from several offered. Hamilton, Thursday. At the Police Court yesterday John Davis, a cook at the Waikato Hotel, was charged with having had criminal connection with one Alice Messenger, a girl under twelve years of age. As the arrest had only been made the previous night, Sergeant McGovern asked for a remand till Monday, whisli was granted. In consequence of no valuation list having been prepared by the Whaingaroa Board, Raglan, the Judge of the Assessment Court, Mr. H. W. Northcroft, has appointed Mr. Frissell, of Raglan, to make such list, and to complete and deposit the samo at Waitetuna Post-office on the 11th instant. Obj<32tions must be delivered at the school-house, Waitetuna, on or before the 20th instant, and will be held the following day.

, A meeting of tho Kirikiriroa Board was held yesterday. Present : The Chairman, Mr. A. Primrose, and Messrs. Gillett, Coatcs, Swarbi'ick, and McLernon. A letter was received from Mr. Taylor, of Taupiri, complaining that the Board in making the approach to the Lagoon Bridge had encroached on his property, and threatening legal proceedings unless a private satisfactory arrangement was made. It was explained that the road, though it encroached, took only a few yards of merely nomiual value. The clerk was instructed to write asking what damage was claimed. Several accounts were passed. A rate of Is in the pound was struck, and the annual meeting of ratepayers fixed for the first Wednesday in July. Cambridge, Thursday. The Government lands contained in the Patetere block have been quickly got ready for sale. The Government survejors have cut up about 23,000 acres, 10,000 of which, situated on the Waipa block, has been cut up into small farms, the balance, unsuitable for settlement of this character, into runs. The land is of good quality, and will be shortly oftered on the deferred payment system. At a special meeting of tho Piako County Council the statement of accounts was read as follows, and passed :—Receipts : Butchers' licenses, £5 ; dog collars, £4 10s; Government subsidy, £244 lls 3d : total, £254 Is 3d. Expenditure : Road formation, £149 Ss 4d; bridges and culverts, £64 2s ; engineering, £14 ISs 6d; balance at Bank of New Zealand, £25 12s 3d : total, £254 Is 3d.

The Waikdto Steam Navigation Company's wharf is now nearly completed. Large stoves and cellarage for coal have been built. As soon as the hoisting apparatus 13 completed for uuloading from the steamers in the river below, business will be commenced on the new premises. The Taotaoroa Highway Board has decided to strike a rate of sixpence in the pound.

Mr. John Fisher and Mr. Richard Reynolds have been recommended by the Resident Magistrate as the Commissioners for the new Pukekura licensing district, and the Cambridge Court-house as the place of sitting. Mr. J. B. Smith had an insurance policy in the New Zealand Insurance Company for £500 on his house and stable. The latter was not burned. A married couple was living in the house, and had retired to bed before 9 o'clock on Tuesday night. A single man sleeping in the room above the stable observed a strong light about 9.30 p.m., and getting up, saw flames coming from the roof of the dwelling-house. He had only time to wake the inmates up, who did not even save their clothes. The house had been handsomely furnished ready for Mr. Smith's marriage. :
