WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.
[FROM OtXR OWX CORRESPONDENTS.] Haiiiltos, Friday. It is expected that there will be a large gathering of members of the four County Councils and several Highway Boards on Monday next, at the Waikato County Council Chambers, Hamilton, to discuss the circular published by the Manawatu County Council, and sent to the several public bodies for discussion and co-operation. Invitations to all members of local bodies in the counties of Raglan, Waipa, Waikato, and Piako have been sent by the Waikato Council to meet on Monday, and if there should not be room in the Council Chambers for this local parliament, an adjournment can be made to the Hamilton Hall. Now that the money for completing the Whutawhata-Hainilton Road baa been lodged by the Government to the credit of the Board, no time will be lost by the trustees in calling for tenders for the necessary works, plans of which are being prepared by Mr. William C. Breakall. - y ■:-.>■ The Waikato cricket team to play the Auckland clubs leave here on Tuesday next, and will be chosen from the following list: — Messri. James Wood, J. B. Smith, Stafford, F. O. Pilling, Soper, Sheath, W. Tonks, Forrest (the best wicket-keeper in the province), Cotton, E. Pilling, Stubbing, Gleeson, and Killpatrick. They will play the West End C.C. on Wednesday, the Otahuhu C.C. on Thursday, on Friday the Auckland C.C, and finish up on Saturday, the 30th, by polishing off the Auckland United. So mote it be. Cambridge, Friday. A meeting of the Pukekura Highway Board was held on Tuesday last when it was resolved to call for tenders for forming the road at Mystery Creek 15 feet wide, and for filling in the approaches to the bridge, Mr. Sturgcs tOi.be on the ground on Wednesday to show intending contractors the work. ; ..-■■■••.■ At the census taken in 187-4 the population of Cambridge was only 619. By the census returns just taken, so far as known, it just doubled. The sale of allotments in Maclean and Co.'s township of Oxford did not come off yesterday, but has been postponed for three weeks. A Maori named Hirihi Warahi was brought up, charged with creating a disturbance in Duke-atreet on Monday last, and remanded to Tuesday. He had been gambling, and lost all his money, and turning out into the street, commenced raising a row. The police Uitorfered, . and Constable Westley seized him and commenced dragging him to the lock-up, the native, fighting, kicking, and biting all the way. Suddenly-he changed his tactics, and fell down as if dead. His Maori friends then sympathising with him, tried to drive the police away, and,a general scuffle-ensued,, but! the police,succeeded, after being; much.^nocked,about- by;the '.'noble suvage;," So. lodge .their,prisoner fin.
