CONCERT AT NORTKCOTE.

A soiree and concert was given in - the Northcote Hall last night'in aid of the harmonium fund of St. John the Baptist's Church. The tea-tables were presided over by the following ladies : —Mesdames Dixon, Mayhew, Maxwell, Lind, Gee, Misses Dixon, Bates, Denby, and Maxwell. At the concert the Kev. J. Bates presided, and made a few remarks, in which he stated the object for which the concert was given. The harmonium at present in.use in the church was sadly out of order, anditwae really necessary that a new instrument should be procured. He, however, would not detain them by making a long speech, but would call upon Mr. Slater for a pianoforte solo, which that gentleman gave in his usual first-class style. Mr.- T. L. White caused great amusement in his recitation of "Marriage in High Life." Two lady amateurs saiig the duet, "O'er the hill and o'er the dale" in good style; after which Mr. Mayhew gave a comic reading, "The Charity Dinner.'" Mr. Brook sang "Doughty Deeds"- with fine effect. Mr. Slater gratified the audience with another solo. Mr. H. Culpan sang' "Wrecked and Saved," and Mr. Forth "When we are parted," both of which were well received. Mr. White recited "The Bridge of Sighs" with great pathos. Mr. Culpan's songs, "Low at Thy feet" and '" The Tar's Farewell," were well received, as were also '' The Irish Emigrant," by Mr. H. C. Brook, and "It was a dream," by Mr. Forth, Mr. Slater efficiently acted as accompanist. At the close, Mr. Mayhew, on behalf of the Ladies' Committee, thanked the ladies and gentlemen who had come from Auckland and its suburbs to help them with the concert. A vote of thanks was also passed to the Chairman. After the concert, which closed with the "National Anthem," a select danee took place, in which a large number of those present engaged.
