AUCKLAND LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH.
Immediately after the meeting of the City Council yesterday evening that body met as the Local Board of Health,—His Worship the Mayor presiding. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Messrs. Connell and Cooper, solicitors, forwarded a petition from twenty-three residents complaining of a nuisance caused by Mr. Soppett's bone mill, and calling on the ■Board to forthwith cause a complaint to be laid before a Resident Magistrate under terms of the 7Sth clause of the Public Health Act. Mr. Goldie, Inspector of Nuisances; had visited the place, and attributed the nuisance to the steaming of the bones before they were crushed.— The Mayor pointed out that under the clause referred to, the Board had no discretionary power. Their duty was compulsory, and he moved that action be taken in accordance with the request, and that the Council's solicitor be instructed to act in the case.—Mr. Crowther was in favour of giving Mr. Soppett notice, but he was overruled, and the motion was .'carried. The Surveyor was also instructed to remove the obstructions from the Freeman's • Bay culvert.—Messrs. Holland and Butler complained of a nuisance caused by the smoke from Mr. Leahy's smithy, corner of Custom-house and Albert-streets. It could be remedied by raising the chimney. It was agreed to write to Mr. Leahy, informing him of the complaint, and requesting him to remedy the nuisance. This was all the business.
