THE GOLDFIELDS.

Success (Coromandel). — The following is a copy of a, telegram received at the company's office, from the manager, yesterday : ' —" Three ounces gold to-day; more showing. Getting under the shot. — Peter REID." [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Gkauamstown, Thursday. New Golden Crown.—There i& very little fresh to report from this mine. The various workings on the battery level are now getting well in hand, but it is probable that ere long operations here will be suspended for a time, and greater attention devoted to the lower levels. Fair progress is being made with the new crosscut through the country on the hangingwall of the old No. 1 lode. A small vein of quartz is being carried along in this crosscut, which shows a little gold occasionally. On the whole, however, this leader has not a very promising appearance. The main drive oa the footwall leader has been extended a considerable distance, and a good block of payable ground opened up ready for stoping. The quar;z obtained from tn>s leader has crushed very well during the month, and the block now opened up promises to be a valuable one. Westward of the old workings on the main lode there is a large block of ground standiug intact to the surface. ! Through this block a rise is being put up on the hangingwall of the lo.de to the brace level. The stopes Herivel's leader continue to produce a fair amount of good-grade crushing stuff. Iu the present face of the drive the leader is i-ather small, but it will no doubt make again as the drive is extended. At the 40-feet level the No. 1 lode is being driven, upon westward towards the slide. In this drive there is a good body of quartz showing, and the block of ground lying between this level and the battery level on this lode is likely to prove a good one. As soon as the drive west is well forward, it is probable that driving eastward will also be started. Driving westward and stoping is being con;. tinued on the main lode at this level. In the workings on this lode there is a large body of quartz showing, much of which has a very promising appearance. As yet it has not proved rich in the precious metal, but it is payable, and an improvement in quality may take place at any moment. Under the footwall oi the main lode another large body of quartz has been discovered running parallel with it. As yet this latter lode has scarcely been proved, and it may turn out to be a very valuable one. On the 100 feet level very little work is being done at present, but the manager is about to commence operations here on a more extensive scale. It is pKK posed to start stoping on No. 2 lode at this level. On this lode there is already a good block of ground opened up with over 100 feet of backs to take out to the battery level. In many places the lode has a promising appearance, and good mineral indications are showing. It is also proposed to clean out the old crosscut which leads to the Monukau mine at this level, and test some of the leaders intersected by it. Many of these leaders have a most promising appearance, and with the excellent appliances the company have at command they will no doubt be made to pay well for working. Much of the ground in which these leaders are lying is in a good locality for gold, and it is not unreasonable to suppose that further prospecting vrill lead to the discovery of valuable deposits of the precious metal. At the 170-feet level the contractors are at present engaged cutting through the No. 1 lode, which is proving a somewhat difficult operation, the quartz being very hard. A parcel of quartz from this lode at this level was recently tried, but did not give a very satisfactory return. In the present face, however, there is an improvement in the appearance of the stone. More mineral, and of a better class, is showina. It is probable that more attention will be paid to this level shortly, but in what direction the manager is at present undecided. The battery is working full time again. During the last month, there has been an improvement in the quality of stuff crushed, and the return will probably show an increase upon the previous one. Much time has been lost, however, through the scarcity of water, and one or two accidents to the race. [BY- TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] | Graiiamsto wn, Thursday evening. Gold Returns.—Alburnia tribute (Sawyer), 15ozs. 6dwts.; Don Pedro tribute |. (Kneebone), 37ozs. 7dwts.; Prince Imperial j tribute (Scanlan), Cozs. lodwts. [ Don Pedko. —Kneebone and party, who have a portion of this mine on tribute, have crushed a parcel of general stuff for the good return of 370z5., 7ozs. of melted gold. Alburnia.—Sawyer and party, who are tributing in this mine,- have crushed a small parcel of quartz for the return of loozs. 6dwts. of melted gold. Coromandel, Thursday. Tiernan's party lodged 93iozs. ; from a crushing of five tons of. general stuff and a parcel of specimens, 7ozs. having been taken out previously:, by the crushing of a few pounds of specimens, thus making the splendid average of over2oozs. per ton. Some very rich stuff was taken out of the low level yesterday. The show in the face is still very good. : Blackmore's have driven 25 feet iu the new level, and expect to cut the reef at the end of the week. The Success manager reports a few ounces of loose gold from the pocket, and expects more golden stoue the next breaking down, which they reckon to be about under the richest place iu the level above. The Bismarck are making good progress in the rise. The country is good. The leader looks well, and is increasing in size.
