POLICE COURT.—Wednesday.

[Before Messrs. W. J. Hurst and 11. Brett, Justices.] Drunkenness. — Three persons were punished for first offences : Pat Rielly, Mary Fitzpatriek, and Michael Ryan, for third offences, were each sentenced to 7 days' imprisonment with hard labour. A Nuisance.—George Wilson was charged with depositing offensive matter in Montaguestreet, Newton. Mr. Tole, for the defendant, pleaded not guilty. James Heffernan, Isaac Wilcox, and Geo. Bevan pave evidence as to the rubbish being on the street and allotment, but did not know who placed it there. Constable dark deposed to the existence of the ] nuisance, and said Mr. Wilson had told , him he deposited the stuff in Montague- j street at the request of some person. Mr. Kinian, of Chapel-street, deposed to having asked Mr. Wilson to put the stuff on his allotment in Montague-street. He did not < pay Mr. Wilson, but he gave him . 6d l "allowance." The matter was not very 1 offensive, and there was hardly a hatful on c the road. There were no dead fowls or fish 1

heads amongst it. Mr. Tole addressed the Court for the defence. Joseph Draper, a carter in the employ of Mr. Wilson, deposed to carting the stuff to Kinian's allotment at his request. He put two loads there, but none of it was on the road. It wa3 city refuse—ashes, gravel, and paper—and contained no offensive matter. Thomas Fenton and George Wilson also gave evidence. A fine of 5s and costs was imposed Stealing Billiard Balls.—William Allen was charged with stealing a set of billiard balls, the property of William Hamley. On the application of Mr. Pardy, the case was adjourned until Thursday. Stealing a Purse and Money.—Mary Gathercole wa3 charged with stealing a purse containing 15s and a pair of earrings, the property of Emily Austin. This case was also adjourned until Thursday.
