SYDNEY GOLD CUP. " [p.eutep.'s cablegram.J . ' Sydney, April 20. The race for the Sydney Gold Cup and 600 sovs., with a sweepstakes of 20s0vs., distance 2 miles,' was run to-day. Sixteen horses started. The race was won by Branch's Progress, Slbs. 21bs. ... ... 1 Strathern, 7st. 21bs. ... ... ... 2 Wandering Jew, 6st. 4lbs. ... ... 3 A good start was effected. Richmond, Orient, and Hesperian got well away to the front, but were soon joined by Canarj', who ■waited clcsely upon them. Hesperian led round the turn, and, passing the grand stand for the first time, was followed by Black Swan, Orient, Major, Templar, the Pontiff, Gunild, The Barber, Richmond, Strathern, and Cynic. In the last round they raced in the same order until nearing the trainers' stand, where Progress improved his position, and came away through the crowd, winning easily by four lengths iu front of Strathern, who also made his way rapidly through the horses at the finish. Wandering Jew made a good third half alength behind Strathern, but only beating Richmond at the winning-post by a head. Wellington finished closely, and finished a good fifth at the Jew's girth, with Braidwood, The . Pontiff, Gunild, Hesperian, Major, and Templar, ;lose behind. Time, 3min. 36-lSsec.
