[USITED PRESS ASSOCIATION".] NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. There were no nominations for the Taranaki Champagne Stakes, and eight nominations for the Taranaki Derby. Last evening the passenger train from Ngaire to New Plymouth had a narrow" escape. On arriving near Inglewood some firewood fell from a truck and got amongst the wheels, throwing the other trucks off the line just as the train crossed the bridge known as the Secoud Ngatara Bridge, about a mile and a-half from Inglewood. The sleepers o£ the bridge were torn up. Part of the train was then disconnected, and came on into town without further impediment, except running over a flue bullock. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. A number of large and valuable blocks of land have been adjudicated on in the Native Land Court during the last iew days. Judgment was given in the case of the Wangatu block of 100,000 acres, of which 15,000 acres are excellent land. It was awarded to Paora Haupa and his tribe, who are conveying to Mr. Robert Cooper. The residue of the block was awarded to Wi Hareouga and his people. Waipau No. 2 block, 37,000 acres, was awarded to Paora Haupa and his tribe. This also is said to be sold to Mr. Cooper. At the Supreme Court to-day, George Miller, on a chartre of larceny, was sentenced to two years; John McLareny, for forgery and uttering, sentenced to nine months; William Michael Downs, for having in his possession two stamps which had been found fraudulently removed from certain deed, was acquitted. The Crown prosecutor entered a, nolle prosequi in the other charges of a similar nature against the prisoner. The reduction of 10 per cent, on Civil Service salaries, it is understood, will be continued until Parliament has had an opportunity of re-arranging the salaries. It is mentioned that the stamp revenue for the financial year, which ended the 31st ult., amounted to cioea on £154,000. A committee was formed to determine the memo, of association. ASHBURTON, Tuesday. A boy named Frank Black, a Lyttelton resident, had a miraculous escape from being killed this morning. He rode on tlxc'A&hburton bridge, behind the first train from the South at full gallop, and consequently did not see that a portion of the planking had been moved in the conrse of repairs, the result being that the horse and rider were precipitated through the opening on to the bed of shingle, a fall of fifteen feet. The horse was killed instantaneously. The boy escaped with severe cuts about the face. At the Police Court, this morning, a man named Keppen, who attempted suicide in the Old Men's Home, was committed to the asylum. The medical testimoney proved him to be of unsound mind. LYTTELTON, Tuesday. The Duke of Manchester arrived here by the Wakatipu from Wellington this mornTIMARU, Tuesday. Over 131,000 sacks of grain hare been received at the railway station in this district this season. To this may be added fully 60,000 sacks delivered at Titnaru by drays. The Juvenile Pinafore Company opened to-night to a crowded house. OAMARU, Tuesday. A petition was sent up to Wellington today against the inclusion of Palmerston with the. Southern portion of this district. The Easter encampment preparations include accommodation for. 1500 men. Great care is being taken that these preparations, are as complete as possible. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The attendance at the Otago schools during the March quarter shows 17,57S children on the roll at the beginning of the quarter, and 19.551 at the end. The average was 16,249, being an increase of 777 over last year. The Board employs 43S teachers. Moritzson's case is fixed for the 20fch. John Moat, labourer, was found dead in his bed—supposed from apoplexy. There is only likely to be one civil case this session. Joseph Gard was convicted of sheep stealing. Mr. Stout moves for arrest of judgment, on the ground of improper admission of certain statements. The Ringarooma brings six yearling colts and fillies'from Mr. Samuel Gardiner's Bimdoora stud consigned to the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., to be landed at Lyttelton.
