Mr. Watt's sentences yesterday—ordering a number of boys charged with applestealing to be whipped, six hours' imprisonment, then to be kept in the Industrial School for terms ranging from six to throe ' years—caused indignation. There was a painful scene in Court with the parents, some of whom had to be removed. The papers are taking .the matter up. Mr. Watt, R.M., made an explanation from the Bench to-day re the flogging and sentencing of boys for apple-stealing, Which had been severely commented on by the press. He said the real punishment was flogging, and that it was necessary to award imprisonment in order to have boys flogged in gaol. Mere committal to the Industrial School was no punishment at all, as upon good behaviour the boys were immediately let out to their parents. By the means adopted, larrikinism in Diuiedin could be. moreeasily prevented than if allowed to get ahead.
