SHOOTING MATCH: RIFLES V. CARBINES.
♦— A match between ten meriibers of the Engineer Company, armed with Snider rifles, and ten of the Artillery Company, armed -with carbines, took place at the •Mount Eden range on Saturday.; Captain Mahon, of the Victoria Company, was in charge of the range. The Artillery team was under the command of Lieutenant "Nbrrie, • and the .Engineer team under lieutenant - Shillington, and. Lieutenant Thwynhani, of the Cadets. The match: proved an easy victory for the rifles, with ai ..majority of 54 points. Some of the best; shots in the Artillery shot very badly, and! there is no doubt as to the inferiority of the--weapon with which they are armed, at the long ranges especially. The ranges were: 200, 400, and 300 yards ; five shots at each range; any position throughout. At the: end of the first range the' Engineers led by 11 points ; at the end of the second range they added 10 points to their lead, giving them 21; and at the 500 yards range they gained 33 points, thus winning the match by 54 points. At the conclusion of the match Lieutenant Norrie called for three cheers for the winners, which were cheerfully given. The following are the scores :— ENGINEERS. - . ARTILLERY.
