FRIGHTFUL EXPLOSION OF VITRIOL WORKS.
Newark, IST. J., January 7. —An explosion, which was heard for several miles, took place at 12.30 a.m. to-day, in the vitriol department of Balbach and Son's smelting works, on the Passaic river. Two boilers exploded, which instantly killed the engineer and three workmen, and seriously injured two others. Three, buildings and about 7000 dollars worth of machinery were destroyed. One end of the house of E. Balbach, sen., was wrecked. His conservatory and stables were also ruined,.and two valuable horses killed. The house of E. Balbach, junr., was injured by flying bricks, and a woman in the third story was seriously hurt. The bodies of the killed are frightfully mangled. All were married men and leave families. Their names are Jolm Mutz, engineer, and J. "SV. Schlee, George 0. Gorman, and John Queen. The badly injured are Oscar Jacobus and Joseph Nerst. The loss is estimated at 20,000 dollars.
