THE REBELLIOUS BOERS.
New York, January 9.—A London special says :—"The Ministry feel more embarrassed by the Transvaal question, which, in so short a time, has attained to such prominence, than they do by their Irish policy. It must be said that a very general feeling prevails throughout the nations that England has no business in the Transvaal, and ought to get out of that district. Gladstone energetically condemned the annexation while out of office ; now, when in office, he sends an army to force annexation down the throats of the people with the bayonet. Naturally, his course exposes him to severe attacks on the ground of inconsistency. The Liberals generally contend that the insurrection must first lie put down, and that then, and not till then, the Transvaal should be restored to the Boers. It is highly probable, therefore, that in the end the Dutch Republic in South Africa will be-established. A despatch from Durban reports that the Boers have driven the Natal mounted police to within three miles from Newcastle. Heavy firing lias been heard in the direction of Wakkerstisam. The Boers are committing excesses on the western borders of Natal.
