CUTTER RACE.

A race for £20 commenced yesterday, at 12.30, between the cutters Gannet, Henry, Mahurangi, and Euphemia, Mr. J. Oxley acting as starter. The course was round Tiri and back. Three of the boats got away together, but the Mahurangi's buoy line got foul of her rudder, and detained her some minutes. Going down the harbour she was well on the north side, and was favoured with a light breeze, which gave her the windward position. When the Euphemia was off Orakei her peak halyards carried away, delaying her some five minutes. At 1.14 the 'cutters passed the North Head, the Mahurangi leading very little, but well to windward, with the Gannet close behind her, also to windward. The Henry was very near to the Gauuet, but the Euphemia was some distance astern. About 2.30 the schooner Mariner passed them off Rangitoto, standing over to the Wade. The Henry was ahead, with the Mahurangi close up; the Gannet being third. They were all standing on the same tack. About 6.30 the s.s. Waitaki passed them becalmed off Tiri tiri. At S the s.s. Argyle sighted them in Tiritiri passage, just.rounding the island, and a nice southerly breeze was springing up at the time. The greater part of the run back would be against a strong ebb tide which considerably retarded their progress.
