THE GOLDFIELDS.

[FROM OUR OWN CORBESPONDENT.I Thames, Saturday, Waiotahi.—iso, 3 level : Sioce cutting through the large reef oil this level the main cross-cut has been pushed ahead much more ! speedily. The No. 3 lode was intersected about 80 feet from the shaft, and, although no gold has been in the quartz, still it contains excellent mineral indications, and when farther developed will no doubt yield payable crashing stuff. Previous to meeting with this lode, however, one or two small leaders were cut in which strong colonrs of the precious metal could be seen. When the work of opening up the now level is further advanced these will be prospected and their quality, tested. During the present week the No. 4 lode has been intersected at a distance of 90 feet from the Bhaft, and on breaking it down good strong colours of gold were disclosed. At present the lode is small, being only about four inches thick, but as it is driven on it will, in all probability, open out ints a much larger body o £ stone. The country in the immediate neighbourhood is of a favourable character, and is the right class for carrying gold-bearing quattz. The new level is about 80 feet below the No. 2, but as the reef underlies considerably, there will be over 90 feet of backs to work npon, with several hundred feet on the line of reef. A day or two's work will break through to the winze which has been sunk on this lode, and then the difficulty of ventilating the winze will be overcome. About 40 feet more driving should bring the No. 5 lode to hand. The quartz obtained from these two lodes on the level above waß excellent crushing di-it, and as some of the best oE the stuff was obtained from the drives on the lodes, it is not too much to expect that the new level will continue to yield equally good stuff, in fact, from the indications met with, there is a good prospect of the quartz being of better quality. . The fact that gold was seen after the first breaking down o£ the No. 4 lode, must be very gratifying to the shareholders. The battery is at present employed on stuff obtained from the stopeß above .the No. 2 level. These stopes are mainly on the jauction of a number of reefs, and it is almost impossible to particularise auy one of them. In this junction there is a portion of the Noa. 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 lodes all jumbled up together. The output o| quartz, however, is not very large, nor is the quality very good. On the bangingwall of No. 5 a new lode about IS inches thick has made its appearance. The quartz contains excellent mineral indications, and has a lively look about it. Hitherto the manager has not had an opportunity of testing it by itself, but he will do so shortly. On this level men are also employed stoping on the No. 2 footwall lode, which, although small, yields very good crushing dirt. With the opening up of the new level the prospects of the Company have improved considerably, and ere long this mine will probably again be numbered among the largest gold producers on the field.

Rowe's Caledonian Tribute Company. —The final cle»ning-up for this company took place to-day. From the Caledonian portion of this oompany's mine about 40 tons of general dirt hare been crushed, which, with a parcel of specimens, yielded 90ozs. fiihrts. gold. From the Tookey portion aboat 20 tons general dirt and a parcel of specimens have been crushed, which yielded 48uzs. 15dwts. gold, making a total of 1390z5. gold. Tho lode continues to yield a considerable quantity of good crushing dirt, »ud from the Tookey portion small parcels of specimens are occasionally obtained. Golden Calf.—The manager of this mine, being anxious to prove the lode below the .No. 3 level before the water rose, started to sink a winze on the lode. This winze has been sunk about 12 feet, and on breaking down the lode on Friday, a few pounds of good picked stone were obtained. On the western side of the winze the reef is pinced up by a small slide, but eastward there is a strong body of Btone, in which good colours of the precious metal can be seen. The slide mentioned above was met with in driving the cross-cut on the terel, and in striking across the lode it appears to disturb it very much. Eastward the lode is split in two, but both branches are nice compact bodies of quartz, from which good crushing-dirt is obtained. The left branch improves as driven upon. The Btopes are yielding a coasiderable quantity of good crushing-dirt, and five head of stamps are kept employed on it. GOLD RETURNS FOR TUB WEEK. Oz.dirt.jr.
