THE DRESSES AT THE MELBOURNE CUP RACE.
Without doubt the handsomest dress seen on the lawn was one of a golden bronze colour, the bodice and train being of a somewhat darker hue ; while the beanty of the dress was enhanced by the front of the skirt being beautifully embroidered with beetles' wings, which glittered brightly in the sunshine. An elegant costume was one of a rich shade of fawn. The robe had a long train with a gathered flounce aud pelisse kiltings. The garniture was of damassc silk of the same shade, and was brought in soft drapery across the front, and then drawn tightly back, displaying tho folds of the front, and shewiug the train to perfection. A very handsome dress was that worn by a lady who is celebrated for her taste in those matters. It consisted of a fawn silk robe, trimmed with coloured embroidery, Hue satin, and fine pleatings of the same material. Corresponding to the colour of the embroidery was a scarp of light fabric, which was arranged in folds covering the greater part of the Rkirfc. Both the design and colouring of the embroidery were very beautiful. Another very becoming costume was one of a light shade of drab, with a long fan-ahape train. The front was richly trimmed with an em broidered scarp and handsome fringe to match. A ruehing of drab brocaded silk was caught tightly back, and a cuirasse body cf brocaded silk completed a very handsome costume. A lady who is recognised as one of the leaders of fashion wore a drab princess robe, trimmed with an embroidered scarp of the same colour, and point lace. There were also a collar and cuffs of point lace, with bonnet to match, in attractive costume wa3 one of very rich satin in a beautiful shade of marine blue, the skirt being handsomely trimmed with silk to match. The bonnet had a light Bhadc of pink, which relieved the otherwise sombre richness of the dress. A greatly admired dress was one of a very rich shade of lavender silk. The dress was a princess robe, and trimmed very prettily with a richly embroidered scarp. This with lace was folded across the front of the skirt, and fell in pointed shell form over the train. Other noticeable dresses were tho following : —A robe of the new shade of coral pink, trimmed with narrow silk flounce, rich white lace, and fringe of the colour of the silk ; the parasol and cape were of pink silk, embroidered with white beads, and trimmed with fringe. A princess robe of pale blue cashmere, opening on to a deeply-pleated palo blue satiu skirt, the reverse of the robe being trimmed with pleatings of white lace, and with a full train of blue satin. An olive silk dress, trimmed with deep embroidery and fringe of olive and lemon colour.—Argus.
