POVERTY BAY.
Wk are continuing our uninterruptedlysuccessful coarse. Buildings are going up like mushrooms, and some of them ar« really very fair specimens of architecture. The new Club building is finished, and the rooms are a great improvement on the old. The Bank of Is'ew Zealand are having a handsome edifice of brick erected, and so they ought, in consideration of their loDg and exclusive possession of banking business here.
The County elections are practically over; the first member returned was the late chairman, Mr. J. W. Johnson, who will probably be re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. The other councillors are Messrs. Milner, Seymour, McKay, A. Graham, S. l.oeke, A. F. Hardy, and probably Mullooly for Tologa, and a native, say, WiPere, for Arai Hiding. There will then be nine members. So far, the only contest has been for tho Gisborne Riding; the others npminated were Villers and Hurry. The latter was not qualified, so did not go to poll, though he would have had no chance of being returned. Villers came to the scratch, but was beaten. The best man, however, in the riding (Mr. J. B. Poynter) could not be prevailed on to stand. [November 14.]
