[PKESS AGBXCT.] WAXGANUI, Wocluesclay. At the Supreme Court today, the Grand Jury threw out the bill against Lewis Lyons Levy for arson. A native named Moti wa3 found guilty of horse-stealing; sentence deferred. A boy named Patriot Dea was found not guilty of indecent assault. Mr. Fan Us, late of Edinburgh, has been appointed Inspector of tho Wauganai Education District, at .1 salary of £400 per annum, and £50 travelling expenses. WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A deputation of settlers from Manawatu waited upon the Premier and Mr. Ballance to day, and urged tho necessity of a railway lino between the Llutt and Manawatu. The Government promised the lino would be surveyed without delay. Sir John Coode is expected here on Saturday. The salmon recently placed iu the different rivers of this district arc reported by the settlers who have seen them to be thriving very well.
A Wairarapa settler named Welsh was stuck up by two men between Masterton aud Taratahi. He was knocked off his horse, beaten, and robbed of £17. One of tho men has been identified as a resident in Wairarapa, but has not yet been arrested. A circular was sent to-day to all heads of departments, instructing them to inform all officers that they can no longer depend upon the 40th section of the Civil Service Act, ISGG, granting a gratuity to their "wives and families after they die. The circular adds that it is now open to officers to provide for their wives and families by means of Government Life Insurance. It is announced, by Ordcr-in-Council, that no cadetship in the Civil Service will count till the cadet receives over £100 per annum. In reference to the long-promised bridge at Napier Heads, it is understood the Government will subsidise the bridge to the amount of £0000, and give to the contractors a lease of the bridge for twenty-oue years. LAWRENCE, Wednesday. The census returns for the Borough of Lawrenco and the electoral district of Tuapeka, shew : Borough, 44-1 males, 401 females ; electoral district, 327G malos, 2111 females. The Hospital Committee are inviting applications for a surgeon for the Tuapeka Hospital ; salary, £200 per annum, with tree house, and right of private practice. C If U ISTC HURC tT, Wednesday. Colonel Whituiore inspected tho police yesterday. A comparison of the Canterbury grain statistics for 1577 and IS7S shews an increase this year o£ 5473 acres, G91.72S bushels wheat; 10,090 acres, 259.053 bushels oats ; DUG acres, G'JOO tons potatoes. This is a decreaso this year of 2259 acres, 169,907 bushels barley. The average yield of wheat in 1577 was bushels ; IS7S, 23 l-10th bushels Oats : 1577, 30 1-lCth bushels ; 1878, 275 bushels. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. In an appeal case to-day, Judge Johnston UDheld the generally received view that the Tippling Act of George 11. is in force in the colony. The Act precludes recovery for liquor supplied in less quantities than 20 shillings' worth.
