QUARTZ SPECIMEN FROM KAIMAI.
We have heard a good deal lately of the existence of gold at Kaimai, but up till now we have not seen any quartz from the locality. A very likely piece of quartz was brought to town on Saturday, by a gentleman from Tauranga, which had been found on the Kaimai ranges. It is not unlike the surface stone which is found on the Thames peninsula. That portion of which has been exposed to the atmosphere ia very much oxidised, while the rest has a bluishgrey tinge, and is heavily charged with mundic. Although the precious metal is not visible to the naked eye, yet from the same stone a quantity has been pounded by a pestal and mortar, which, when panned off, shewed a prospect of gold. The gentleman who has the stone is about to have it tested at the Bank of New Zealand, when we shall be in a position to give a definite value to it.
