THE HARBOUR BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting of the Harbour Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present : W. C. Daldy, Esq. (in the chair), Messrs. W. L. Eaton, J. T. Boylan, M. Niccol, Wm. Buchanan, O. Mays, D. McKenzie, and J. S. Macfarlane. c Minutes. —The minutes ot last meeting were read and confirmed. , Correspondence.—A second letter was j received from Messrs. Owen Jones and Co., stating that they considered themselves entitled to some recognition of their services j ; in tendering for the erection of the graving- Q dock. This letter had been sent in reply to r one from the Board, statiug that the claims g could not be recognised.—No action was Q taken upon this matter. a The Graving-dock.—A letter was re- g ceired from Mr. W. Errington, in which ( lie stated his terms for the superin- j tendcnce of the construction of the j dock, and of making the preliminary survey for the purpose of preparing plans and reporting to the Board thereon. Q This charge would be 5 per cent on the value ( of the works constructed, but should his j. pi- ns be not approved by the Government j Engineer, or from any other cause should not a be carried out, his charge for his services r would be £150. A copy of the telegram sent by the Board to the Premier, asking if there c would be any objection to the alteration of a the dock plan, was read, and it was stated j that no answer had been received to it. 'Lhe minutes of the committee meeting were also read, and shewed that it had been agreed in j the event of a favourable answer being re- £ c.ived from the Premier that the Hoard should avail itself of Mr. Errington's services. It had also been agreed that Mr. Errington should make a survey of Calliope ( - Point, North Shore, aud estimate the cost of j erecting at that place a large dry dock.—Mr. c Buchannan said that this survey had not yet been made, but that it would be made during v the low tides this week.—The Chairman r moved—" That Mr. Errington be instructed to proceed with the draft plans, to be sub- c mitted to this Board."—Seconded by Mr. v Cosgrare, and carried. Land-slip at Parnell. —A letter from j the Chairman of the Parnell Highway Board was read. It stated that the District Board were willing to permit the Harbour Board to carry out its works at Parnell; called attention to the state of theflandslip there ; and stated that the District Board had ro authority to spend any money out of the c rates to any such works.—After coonsider- j able discussion the matter was referred to g the "Works Committee to report upon. Wharfage Fees.—An application was re- <; ceived from Mr. Staines for the wharfage fees j upon a shipment .of manganese to be re- 0 mitted. The ground of the application was E that the manganese had been shipped as _ ballast, and was of trifling value. —It was < moved and carried that the repeal could not a be entertained. I Australian SmrriNG. —A letter from the u Secretary of the Central Board of Health a was read, requesting that the Harbour- 1 masters and pilots should be requested to r j make special enquiries as to the state of pas- g sengers and crews of Australian vessels. a The Chairman said that instructions had s been given in accordance with the requ" "t contained in the letter. 3 Leases.—A letter was reeeivrd from Mr. t George Holdskip, stating that he objected a to sign the lease of allotments; that he was i ready to explain matters to the Board, and <] wished his objection to be taken into con- g tideration.—On the motion of the Cb.-iiman, j : it was agreed that the matter be referred to a the Works Committee to report upon. j: Finance. —The report of the Committee jj upon the salaries of officers was received. In c bringing it forward, the Chairman said that, B in accordance with a by-law o. the Board, j] the salaries had been cDusidered. Three a alteratious were proposec 1 . The first was an t increase of £50 per year in the sultry of the q secretary and treasurer, whose work and responsibility had increased very consider- j ably during the past year. The others were a additions of £15 each to the two clerks in J the office, whose work had also increa ed c during the year. He moved the adoption t of the Finance Committee minutes. The salaries of the officers, as shewn on the minutes, were a3 follows: —Chairman, £.200 j ; secretsry and treaaurer, £400 ; check clerk, 1 £175; first clerk, £IGS ; second, clerk, £90; 1 toll collector, £256 ; engineer, £450 ; cadet, i £50; chief harbour master, £350; harbour i master, £300; assistant pilot master, £220 j i second pilot master. £200; signalman, £ 1 20; i chief boatman, £120 ; two boatmen at £102 ; each. and assistant wharfinger, £175. Mr. : Mays thought t'le sa'iry oi the signalman ought to be increased. The motion that the minutes be adopted, coupled with the request that the committee be repuested to re-con-sider the item of the signalman s salary, was carried. The fortnightly financial statement was read to the Board, and was as follows : —General account, £2492 Os Sd; loan account, £10S7 6s : total, £3551 0s Sd. Statement of Funds.—To balance in bank, £2474 14s 9d ; cash on hand, £15 15s Id : total, £2490 9s 4d. By accounts to be paid, £2124 14s 7d: total, £304 14s 9d. Loan account—balance in bank, £5920 5s 2d ; accounts to be paid, £10S9 6s : total, £7830 i 19s 2d. The Finance "Works and Endowment Committees reports were adopted. Tenders. —Timber : Three tenders were received for the supply of timber, and were as follows E. Carr, heart of kauri per 100 feet, 13s lid ; second quality timber, Ss 3d ; J. Carlow, heart of kauri, Is ; second quality, Ss Cd. D. Goldie, heart of kauri, 14s'lld; second quality, Ss lid.—Mr. E. Carr's tender, being the lowest, was accepted, on the motion of Mr. J. Cosgrave.—lron Work : For the supply of iron work the tenders were as follows :—R. Millar, nails and spikes, 4Jd per lb. ; screw-bolts, 4Jd per lb. Nichols and Paul, nails and spikes, 4d per ' lb.; bolts, 3Jd per lb. ; nails, 5d per lb. J. Leary, all nails, 4Jd per lb.; bolts and spikes, I 4d per lb.; nails, 44d per lb. It. Burnett, I nails and spikes, 4d per lb. ; screw-bolts, ; I 3Jd per lb. ; nails, 4£d per lb.—Mr. Bur- ! nett's tender was accepted. Cartage : One 1 tender was received for cartage. It was from j I Mr. Winstone, as follows :—Per load, 2s ; per hour, 2s 6d; per day one-horse dray, 1 * 12s ; two-horse dray, 18s. Scoria, per cubic [ yard, 3s 3d, —tolls, when working on the wharf, to bo added.—The tender, being a c fair one, was accepted. p This concluded the business.
