CHURCH OF ENGLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL, PARNELL.
I The annual examination and distribution of prizes upon breaking up for the Christmas holidays was held yesterday. The examination was conducted by the iiev. Mr. Hassard, who reported generally upon the progress made during the year. At the distribution of prizes which followed, the Rev. Dr. Cowie, Bishop of Auckland, took the chair, and addressed the scholars. His Lordship, however, was obliged to keep other engagements before the proceedings concluded, and the chair was taken by the Ven. Archdeacon Maunsell. There was present a very large assemblage of ladies and gentlemen, parents, guardians, and friends of the pupils. Mr. Adams, the head-master, read out a list of the pupils, with the marks of merit set opposite the names of each. The Ven. Archdeacon Maunsell addressed the pupils upon the occasion of breaking up for the holidays. He exhorted the non-succeßsful competitors for prizes to. be persevering. The classes were then practised in reading and recitation, and the several exhibitors were loudly applauded. The following is the prize list: — Holy Scripi PRKs —Bishop's prize, first class, E. H. Williams; " Sunday Magazine," second class, H. James. Fjbst Division. — Dr. Golnsbros, classics ana general excellence, T. M. Barstow: Mr It B. Lusk's, mathematics and general excellence, H. S. Ludbook; Rev J. Hates's, £ngli-h, and general excellence, E. H. Williams; " Corals and Coral Islands'" (Kanaj, science aud general excellence, T. M. Barstoir; "Light" (Tyndal), diligence and progress, S. Ludbrook; "The Insect" (Michelet), diligence and progress, Edward Morton. Drawing. —Mr Hoyte's, "Great Masters," T. M. Barstow. Second Division.—" Spain and its People," classics and best awwerlng, H. James " InHect World," mathematics, U. Beale; "Human Race,"English, P. Butler; " Mexico" (Frescott/. history, 'V. rhillipsun; "Self-Help" (Smiles), diligence and progress, P. Dufaur. Third Division. —Highest marks, "Beeton's Heroes," &c., Herbert Maunsell; second prize, " Great Battles," Robert Maunsell; third prize, " Great Dutch Admirals," G. Kissling; fourth prize, " Grimm's Home Stories," E. Adams. Kxtra Prizes. —"Out of Dnnrs" (Wood), Harry Smith; " Trespassers" (Wood), William Hall. 1 —The performances of the pupils wero the subject of very general encomium.—The Chairman having pronounced the benediction, the school was dismissed for the holidays.
