PORT ALBERT.
So accustomed have wo become to trust to the honesty of our neighbours, and so entirely free from any fear of having our houses robbed, that many settlers never think of locking or bolting their doors either -when they go out or go to bed at night. Tlie intelligence of a house having been entered and robbed in broad daylight has consequently caused as much astonishment and consternation as an earthquake. 'Nothing of the sort has occurred for the last nine years, and we have so learnt to believe one another incapable of such a thing that wo feel certain it must be some stranger. And for the credit of our district I would gladly prevent the publication of such a disgraceful occurrence. The facts are just these : On the afternoon of Wednesday, 27th instant, while Mr. and Mrs. Trendwell were out at work in the orchard, some one entered the house, situated at the edge of the forest, and carried off a large blanket, bread, butter, soap, and some other things, besides a pound note and Sd. All that was seen and heard was, the lifting of a window blind, the disturbance of the hens as the scoundrel made off, and the tracks of a man's naked foot for some distance through the bush. And following up the seal ah the following morning, a camping place wrts found, with the embers of a fire still burning, thus affording -still further groands for believing it was a tramp and no settler.- Tramps will be entertained with caution in this locality for some time to come.—[Our Correspondent, October 28.]
