WAIUKU.
A public meeting was held on the 30th ult. f in the old. school-house, to take into consideration the advisability of the trustees handing over the building and site to the Presbyterian body. Owing to the inclemency
of the weather there were only about fifteen . persons present. Some years.ago the site on . which the "building stands was given by E. Constable, .Esq., to the Protestant portion of the community, for a place of worship and a school-house. The Episcopalians, Wesleyans, and Presbyterians were the only denominations represented. At that time sejy;ices used to be.cpnducted by the I sectsV : Subsequently,' the 'Wesleyans and" Episcopalians'naivW 'built' places of worship for themselves, the Presbyterians having had sole - use of v the place , for. ; some i time past;. Now they wished the place to be handed over "to - "tti'em, to enlarge and improve it.—Mr. J. Hedge was called'to the chair, and. read , the notice convening ,the meeting, and explained that the convener of the meeting, Mr. C. Hosking, was. absent, through illness.-—Mr. W. Smith moved, "That the property be handed over to the Auckland Presbytery, to be held in trust for that denomination."—Mr. T. Reid seconded. —Mr. • Green opposed the motion, stating that the property .was given. to all Protestant denominations.—Mr. W. J. Harris thought the meeting had not much to do with it; the property was held by trustees, and he considered it remained with them as to its disposal.—Mr. Greenwood moved, as an amendment, '' That the property remain in trust, as at present."—-Mr.- Bishop seconded.—Mr. Reid said that if the trustees and donor were agreeable, it would be legal to transfer the trust. -The Presbyterians were almost in a position to build for themselves, but thought it would be better for all parties if .some arrangements could be made.—Mr. Constable said at the time the land was given and the building erected there were three religious denominations represented in the district, and suggested that the property be valued and the Presbyterians could buy out the other two denominations. —Mr. E. Hamlin agreed with the last speaker.—Mr. Reid thought it might be. better for the Presbyterians to another building.—The resolution was Carried, copied to be forwarded to the trustees. The meeting ...then separated.—The meeting that was to have, been held this evening to take into consideration our Christmas.races and sports, stands adjourned till Saturday next, at 6 p.m., in consequence of the wet weather. : - ■ -u i
