AMERICAN CONSUL.

Tns following is the copy of a petition forwarded to the Hon. the Colonial Secretary : — "Auckland, N.Z., April 12, 1871.—Sir,—We are informed by Mr. J. M. Dargaville that he has been appointed Consular Agent here, subsidiary to the Consul at the Bay of Islands, for the United States, vice D. B. Cruickshauk, both genii-men being British subjects, anc' consequently dii-qualified for the more important office of Consul. In view of the relations now existing between the colony and the United States, in the matter of the postal contract, and the probable commercial interest arising therefrom, we think the American Government should be asked to appoint a Consul at Auckland, and we respectfully beg you will agree with us ami ask them to do so. We may meution that there will be no difficulty in finding a suitable person, as we have an American citizen, Mr. Harlan Page Barber, of the firm of Rolph, Strrry and Co., New Zealand, gum and flax merchants, New York, resident umongst us.
