PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
The Council met yesterday afc the usual hour. Several petitions were referred to the Petitions Committee. A long and interesting discussion took place on tho report of the Selcct Committee upon the Highways Act. It -was agreed to postpone legislation on tho subject until next session. The Appropriation Bill passed through committee, and was ordered to be read a third time on Thursday nest. The Council agreed to recommend a claim preferred by Dr. Hovell for £65 to be paid. It was agreed to leave tho question of buildings for the Provincial Government offices to the Superintendent. It was stated as probable that the site of tho Albert Barracks might be handed over to the province before next session. The motion relating to the claim of Peter Grace was discharged from the order paper. An amendment to a motion of Dr. Stratford, was amended by Dr. Nicholson, and agreed to as amended. Tho amendmeht recommended that the Superintendent woul&tako steps to got tho Act altered next session of the Assembly. Mr. Swaneon proposed a motion standing in his name, relating to _ the Harbour Trust, but tho debate was adjourned to this day. Tho Council adjourned at twenty minutes to twelve o'clock.
