Tlic town trade during the past week has not. been bri-k, but a good country business is doing, and stution orders are coining in freely, which to a great ext lit compensates for the slackness otherwise experienced. The retailers are now holding back from buying. as ii is getting towards tin end of' the month. JTlie English mail, which leaves tomorrow, is, we endersland, llie last regular subsidized steamer, so in future we shall have to rely on chance boats, —an inconvenience that will be seriously felt by commercial houses.
Teas are finding purchasers in small lots only, and quotations continue almost nominal. In sugars the Jate auctions have fully supplied all our wants, and first houses find it diilicult. to cileet sales even in small parcels. We do not expect any more cargoes from Mauritius for some time. Candles and kerosene are seldom placed in anything like large parcels, but stocks arc not excessive, and the trade are notj forcing sales. Hops are offering more plentifully, and fine pale samples have been meeting -with some favour. The demand for spirits has not improved. Sales of brandies, both in bulk and ease, are almost nominal ; case whiskey has been very scarce, but by the Zoalandiu we shall have our wants fully supplied. The grain market remains very inactive, as the demand for export has entirely fallen oil , , and holders: can place only very small lines. 'Die frado done in flour is trilling, and mostly confined to local wants ; quotations remain at from £12 10s to £13. An occasional order I'or comes forward, but the present high prices cheek all speculation. Values remain from Is to 4s 3d. Barley is wanted, and u few small lines have been siold at Cs. STOCK AND STATION HEPOHT. F;al sheep arc still scarce and readily saleable at our last quotations. At the Carl ton Yards on Wednesday, a pen of merino wethers in the wool reached 13s : but they were of very good quality besides having heavy (leeees. Other wethers in the wool—little belter than stores—made about 7s. In cattle a change has taken place in the demand for fat, which is simph the result of si plentiful supply. The price cannot be ([noted at more than 32s Gd per lOOlbs, and transactions have talcen place at even less tlian flisit. For store cattle there is, however, a ready sale, at prices which leave a very slight, margin for the expense of fat - t.ning.— Times, Nov. 27. OTAGO. This day has not been attended witli much business of a noticeable character among import houses, the auction sale of sugars furnishing the only matter of interest. There is, however, a fail- iipoounrry trade going forward, wit h the prospect of improved orders. The grain and /lour markets are dull, and without change in values. By auction, Messrs. M'Landress, Hepburn and Co. succeeded in phu!ini» the whole of the esv.-go of the Prospectors at pi-ices showing a deciine, though not greater than might iiave been expected from the fully supplied state of the market, the difference" being most observable in the finer samples. Fine white crystals were placed v.t £3(j ss, and good whites at £35 to £35 17s fid ; ~ood vcllow crvstals, £34 2s Gdto .C 34 15s ; lower descriptions, £32 12s Gd to £33 •. and >>ood yelloiv counters, £33 12s Gd.— ha!l;i Tinws, A T 'or ( -> - ber 24.
