CHIEF POSTMASTER OF AUCKLAND.
The following is the reply to the letter forwarded some time since to the Ministry, recommending Mr. Fitzgibbon for the vacant appointment of Postmaster. Whilst regretting that the Government could not accede to the request of the gentlemen signing the letter, we cannot but feel gratified at the concluding paragraph of the reply, in which it is stated that Mr. Fitzgibbon's claims to promotion will not be lost sight of. General Post-office, Wellington, November 22, 1809. Gentlemen—l am dhected to acknowledge receipt of your letter, recommending that Mr. Pitzgibbon be appointed Chief Postmaster of Auckland in the place of Mr. C'orbctt, and to inform you th-at previously to the receipt of your letter the vacaucj was filled up. In doing so the Government adopted that course which, they are convinced, is best calculated to ensure the proper conduct of the Auckland Post-office. The Postmaster-General is glad to find that Mr. Fitzgibbon holds the good opinion of so many influential persons in Auckland, and directs me to assure you that his claims to promotion will not be lost sight of. I have the honor to be, Sir, Tour very obedient servant, E. Ehott Eliott, Secretary. Messrs. iSathan and Co., Messrs. Ovren and Graham, and others signing the letter, Auckland. —^— i
