-i By the Storm Bird we have still later Wanganui i news. Tito Kowaru has taken up his old position at | Ngutu oto Manu, having returned from Tara- ' naki with considerable reinforcements. Colonel : Lyons with a corps of observation, had started oil an expedition from "Wanganui, but fell in with none of the enemy until nearly returned . again to Wanganui, when he met a party of » some forty Hauhaus, of whom they killed three men and an old woman. Fifty natives, under - Hori Grey, proceeded to occupy a post in the Patea district on the 6th inst. We take the following from the Wanganui 1 Times of the Bth inst. ' _ Patea, 7th May, 1869. Colonel Lyons with the Ngatiporous and some men of No. 3 division, have returned from their upk river expedition. "Whilst up river they fell in with none of the enemy, but on their return encountered J about, forty Hauhans near little Taranaki, whom they attacked, killing three men and a woman, the j rest fled into the buah. The Hauhaus hare returned to several localities, to one of which the force will march to-morrow to attack. The Ngatiporous shot the woman, as they said she was too old to be bothered with. Tlia men were shot down whilst fighting. As the fellows are - coming back our little force will have hard work of it. Wo expected the Wanganui natives up yesteri° day. We have not enough men, but still can, send out a force able to match the Hauhaus. A fire took place at Wanganui on the sth inst. The Chronicle of the 6th says— About half-past ten o'clock last night the alarm of fire was given, and in the black darkness of the : night the powerful glare of fire suddenly visible in a populous part of the town, was calculated to raise the worst anticipations of those that flocked from all quarters to Wicks teed Place. It' was found that the shon opposite the Phcenii Hotel, lately in the occupation of Mr. "Vinoenfc as a butchery, but at the time occupied, was on fir# in every part The efforts of those present were successful in confining the fire to where it originated. The premises were covered by an insuranoe effected by the New Zealand Insurance Company. The following paragraphs are from the Chronicle of the 3rd inst.:— Mmci Kinoi a.
