THE POLLING AT NEWMARRKET.
To tho Kditor of the Hebaed. Sin,—Can you give mo cny information by whoso authority the poll was closed beforo half past threo o'clock in the evening of the day of p illing at Newmarkot, which is thoroughly protested ngainst. Povorul watches were produced, and every person, except ono or two that had some interest in having it closed, acknowledged that the poll was closed a long time before four o'clock. Such an illegal transaction as has been done at Newmarket ought to bo strictly looked into, ns none can say, if those thing aro to be carried on, what damngo it might do to the Province at large. For wliobii benefit it was done I cannot sny. Sometime after the doors wero closed, Mr. Thomas Russell, and Mr. Williamson, nnd several more, came to give their votes, and tho doors were closed against them, Tho poll-clerk was told by them that it was not four o'clock. In all my lifo I never saw a more-unjust act done at any election whatever. I pulled my watch out of my pocket, and offered to put if,into BDy gentleman's hands, if either of tho two persons that wero employed to take tho poU would do the same with their watches, and havo them Bent into town to see which was right, but my proposal was rcfustd. I hope for the public benefit, Mr. flditor, you will publish those lines.—l am, &0., Benjamin C. Tuiinbb. Betreat Cottage, July 2, ISGB.
