GOLD AND THE SOUTHERN CROSS.
To the Editor of the Herald. Sin, —It is somewhat amusing to see how the above " Oracle" raves about gold tliis morning, and were it not for the fact that much evil may resiUt from these false inferences from incidents which, although not truth, have some little truth in them, we coukl allow them to pass without remark, but as strangers to the province may be induced to go into the districts enumerated in the Cross' article on the gold fields, and will, probably, find nothing, discredit will be thrown on the Province. Ido not profess to be an authority in geological matters, nor should I like to say there is no gold in the North, but I do say that I am quite convinced nono has ever been found there. As to Euatiuigata, the reportis at least 12 or 18 months old. The settler who thought he saw indications of gold oi\ l\\s Umd, aud who sunk a shaft and left his working to put in his crops, is a person well known to inc. Thisoecured in the Spring of Inst year; but the evidences, after waiting for a month then, wero not sufficient to induce him to resume his operations. As to the shot, gold said to bo found in the creek, near what is called Tigho's mountain, after the reported find the crcck was prospected, and nothing could be found. This also occured many months ago. lam largely interested in this district, and would rejoice to find a mine of wealth so near; but should be not a little annnoyed to gcta host of disappointed, deceived miners about me The enormous oircrs made for land in the District needs no contradiction, for no sane person would believe it.
