DINNER TO SIR GEORGE ARNEY.
On the 9tli nit., the members of the legal profession gavo a dinner to his Honor Sir George Arney, on the occasion, of his return to Auckland from Europe after an absence of two yeara. The dinner was strictly professional and the proceedings were private. The number of legal gentlemen present was about thirty. The clinner took place in the long room of the Provincial Government Buildings known as Bellamy's, and Mr. Canning was caterer, whose experience and skill in this department are well known. The dinner was indeed of the most recherche description, every delicacy of the season being provided, and the serving and attendance on a scale and a completeness which is rarely attained in the colonies. Indeed the whole affair was worthy of the occasion. The dinner was strictly what is known as a " bar-dinner," and only members of the bar. could be present, but the principal officers'of the Supreme Court were invited. His Honor Mr. Justice Moore, Col. Balneavis, Mr. Eegistrar. O'Brien, Mr. Deputy Iregistrar BLissling, were of the number of tnose invited and were present. The dinner was served at.seven o'clock precisely, at which hour his Honor the Chief Justice with his usual punctuality arrived. The dinner over and the cloth removed, the usual loyal toasts were given after which the " Guest of the Evening." As the dinner was purely a compliment by the members of the legal profession to his Honor the Chief Justice, no invitations were forwarded to the Press. This will account for our not publishing a report of the proceedings. The enthusiastic greeting offered to so eminent a Judge must have assured him of the high esteem in which his personal and public character is held, not only by the legal profession, but by the people of the Province of Auckland.
