THE AUTHORSHIP OF THE LETTER SIGNED "LADY AMATEUR."
To all whom it may concern, (Per fivor of the New Zealand Herald.) As I am informed that Messrs. Rice, Brown, and others, have been employing their leisure timelatelyin circulating a report to the effect that I am theauthor of the letter signed " .Lady Amateur," and which appeared in your journal soma days since, I beg to assure all and sundry that those gentlemen, unfortunately over-estimating thMrown shrewdness and penetration, hare fallen into the very grave error of stat:ng that which is not in iiecordanca with faci. Ihey liave been distinctly informed in this office, that the letter and its signature wiire bona fute as they purported to be, and if they think that they wili succeed in eliciting the name of the authoress by affecting f> doubt the truth of that assurance, and by attributing the authorship of the letter to me, I think I am correct in assuring them fhut they are very grievously mistaken in calculations. Sir. Brown's character f6r sup—erlative generosity is too well known and appreciated to be affected by the remarks of any " Lady Amateur," and of course the genera' public fully comprehend the disinterested motives which induced Mr. Rice to play the part of "Damon" to Mr. Brown's " Pythias." Hsn-ry Bbett, Shipping Reporter, New Zealand Heuaid.
