ACKNOWLEDGMENT.
To tlic Editor oftlio New Zealand Herald. Sib,—Allow me to ox press my gratitudo to the Rev. Mr. Hlkin uuil to yourself for the very kind notico of mJ" recent lecture which has this diiy appeared in your columns from the pen of that gentleman. It has afforded mo no small pleasure that the fraternity of Jews', in this city Jiavo proved themselves capable of receiving, not only without offence, but with all that cordiality which is ever duo to conscientiousness, various utterances of doctrino and of sentiment in which it is well known they do not coincide. The letter of acknowledgment which you have so kindly published has this peculiar valuo—it proves to the peoplo of Auckland that the strongest convictions which in some respects necessarily divido us from each other, by no means provent, amongst right-minded men, the most perfect charity and the truest good-will. That prejudice and bigotry are sometimes allied with such convictions, I acknowledge with unfeigned regret; yet at tho same time T must affirm that the unmeasured denunciations of conscientious integrity, branded with the names of " Denominationalism," " Sectarianism," &c., &c., have frequently been much too sweeping and unguarded for the service of truth. This is not the first Brisish colony in which I have proved tho generons liberality of the descendants of the Patriarchs, and I trußt the evidence will not be thrown away upon your readers that the most devoted allegiance of men to what they receive as tho truth of God, never requires the diminution of personal esteem and respect,—l am, &c., P. H. CoHxroßD. Auckland, 20th June, 1567.
