MR. BENNETT'S OFFER OF THE YACHT HENRIETTA TO PRINCE ALFRED.
The following correspondence between Ifr. James Gordon Bennett, jun., and his jKoyal Highness Prince Alfred has been permitted to be published, as the sentiments expressed in his Royal Bighness's letter are of public interest, and tend to show tlie feeling of -England towards I the United States : — | Off CowG3, December 31, IS5(j. I "5 our Eoyal Highness,—At Lord Lennox's dinner | on Friday last you were pleased to mat h your yacht | the Viking to suil the Henrietta around the Isle of E Wight next August, for a cup worth £100. I would | not say so the:), because I was bound to mike the E match proposed ; but, iu fact, this arr.mge- ; raent will somewhat interfere with the disposition : which I hod determined to make of my yacht iu case ' she should win the ocean race. I beg that you vrU accept as a New Year's gift to an English yachtsman from an American yachtsman the Henrietta, as she no\v lies in perfect order off Cowes, and I haTC instructed Captain Samuels to hold her subject to v your orders. The unbounded hospitality with which the American yachtsmen have been received bra l ! classes in England will always be remembered in the V United States with the warmest gratitude, and I sincerely hope that you will not deprive me of the opportunity of acknowledging this most re- S ception. by presenting the winning jacht to the /■ representative of English yachtsmen. I have the honour to remain, very respectfully, j': your?, ji? J. G. BESSEir, Jun. fVj Clarence-house, January 22ud, 15G7. |? Dear Mr. Bennett, — I find it difficult to express how gratefully I appreciate the kindly feeling which Ej dictated your letter of the 31st ultimo, as well as the k splendid present which you olFer to my acecptanc , ; U but mo3t of all the delicacy with which you seek ts Ef diminish the personal obligation under which yen R would lay me by giving your generous offer an inter- K ! national character. It is, inde< d, this last considers- fe tion only which has led me to hesitate in replying to E your letter, for personally it would have been in- B possible for me to accept so costly a present, but I Bj felt bound fully to consider the question in 6 in which you were good enough to place it, and if on gfull consideration I fed compelled to decline your B. generous offer, I trust that neither you nor jo'JT g gallant competitors, nor your countrymen at large will § beileve that the yachtsmen of England less appreciate v or less reciprocate, the feeling of good fellowship j>fe . which prompted the offer. The Henrietta is a ressel gH which any man may feel proud to possess, and 1 ,^j| trust she may long continue in the hands in which V raj she has accomplished so triumphant a success. VTs gjjj must try to find a rival to her, and do our best a ';;Bj common wi h all Englishmen. I sinceiely hope that ||M such friendly rivalry may be the only description of [vjffl content in which nur respective countries may ever I|l| be engaged. It has given us great pleasure to cfieri : |Hj cordial reception to you and your compmu.w in igj England, and I feel assured that if my professional r ;|g duties i:j command of one of Her Majesty's ships '-jS should ever take me to your shore, I should there -jg meet, on the part of my brother seamen, with aK" ception not less hearty "than that which we hive tee" j w happy fo afford jou hero. | @ Beiieve me, yours sincerely, list ALFRE 1 ' Egg (Pee Atlantic Telegeawi). ffßj New Yobk, February 25, evening.
